World Affairs Council News Week of October 22-28, 2018

October 22, 2018

Dear Members and Friends,

Good day from the Tennessee World Affairs Council.

First, I’d like to thank the Council members who came out yesterday for our first ever Members’ Reception at the Yazoo Brewery Taproom. It was great to see everyone there for food, fun, a round of the WorldQuest quiz competition and a tasty pint. Well done to Umet Gunebir on taking home the quiz prize — a pair of tickets to the October 31st Senator Corker luncheon (details below).  Special thanks also go to Yazoo Brewery and our taproom friends Justin, Amy and Ben. The reception was just part of our increased attention to providing special benefits to members on top of the satisfaction of being a stakeholder in global affairs awareness in the community.

We’re continuing through a busy month of events that meet a range of interest and opportunities.

Tonight (Oct 22) students and others interested in working in global affairs jobs will be at our semi-annual International Careers and Jobs Panel. TNWAC Board Member and Lipscomb Political Science professor Dr. Susan Haynes has put together a terrific panel (LINK). This series is among the most popular events on our calendar and rewarding to us to see so many students learn for the first time what opportunities there are to “work in the world.”

Tomorrow (Oct 23) join us for our “Cover to Cover” teleconference with Dr. Sarah Igo. On Friday (Oct 26) be at Belmont at noon for our “Global Dialogue” hot topic “Cyber Security and the U.S. Elections,” with ThinkTennessee’s Shanna Hughey. This week we’ll also release Episode 2 of the Council’s Podcast, “Global Tennessee” — be on the lookout for it. And please be sure to register now for next week’s (Oct 31) luncheon with Senator Bob Corker, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.  Details and links for all of these follow.

Apart from community global affairs awareness programs the Education Outreach fall schedule is in full swing. Catherine Kelly, our coordinator, has assembled an impressive field of schools and teams already and is searching for more teachers (or parent coaches) and students for WorldQuest teams, our flagship global affairs competition.  Thanks go to Belmont Bruin alum Salwa Saba, a long-time volunteer with the council for her work on making WorldQuest a success.

While an aggressive calendar of events and education programs are a priority to bring the world to “stakeholders” in our community, we’re also working hard to ensure our Council, a nonprofit, “501c3” educational charity, has the resources it needs to operate and to be sustainable.

To that end we’re in the middle of our first Membership Month. You’ve already seen us step up our game in members services, offering members-only benefits, like the regular “Global Eats” dinner this month and the early bird access to major programs like Senator Corker’s luncheon. We will continue to keep our members — backbone of the Council — in mind as we present new opportunities. Already a member? Thank you.  Not yet?  This is the time to sign up. Check with Logan Monday, TNWAC’s Program and Development Manager for information, member sign up or with program ideas.

Lastly, we welcome home World Affairs Council Board Chairman Jim Shepherd who completed a week in Qatar along with a delegation from the World Affairs Councils of America. This leadership group was organized for a fact-finding mission in this important Gulf nation that is at the center of U.S. relations in the region. The WACA delegation visited numerous government, business, military, cultural and other facilities and met with scores of officials, business people and others. Look for Jim’s debrief on our Podcast in coming weeks.

And a quick Email preferences reminder. You can get World Affairs Council happenings in one place (“Only Weekly News”). You should check your subscription preferences. Best wishes for a great week.
