World Affairs Council is Seeking Interns for the Spring of 2017

The World Affairs Council internship program is an extension of the mission to educate and inspire members of our community to know the world. Its principal purpose is to provide practical experience to students in the subject matter of global affairs awareness and the methods employed to achieve those ends.

World Affairs Council internship openings are unpaid positions that may, but are not required to be, coordinated with a student’s parent institution for academic credit.

Council staff members view our interns as an important part of the Council’s work and will make every effort to integrate them into all aspects of the Council’s operations.

BACKGROUND

The Tennessee World Affairs Council (TNWAC) is a nonpartisan educational nonprofit organization (501c3) founded to encourage and inspire members of the community, especially students, to know more about the world.

It was launched in Cookeville, Tennessee in 2007 and currently operates from a base of operations in Nashville, Tennessee. From its home office – located with its educational partner, Belmont University – it carries out a mission, bringing global affairs awareness programs and resources to communities around the state.

The World Affairs Council enjoys a special relationship with Belmont University, however, its operations and programs are open to the general public and students from any institution.

INTERNSHIPS

In its decade of service the World Affairs Council has operated with a small group of volunteers and interns. As it expands its size and capabilities it seeks to attract a regular cadre of interns to increase and improve its community and education outreach work.

In that regard students are sought for unpaid internships.

• Students can obtain internship credit based on their academic program requirements. It is the responsibility of the intern to arrange with their academic institution for credit.
• Flexible schedule (10 – 15+ hours per week)
• All internships are unpaid. The TNWAC does not provide benefits to interns (i.e. sick time,vacation time, health insurance, etc.)

The Council will work to ensure a significant portion of an intern’s time is spent on achieving goals agreed to at the beginning of the internship although there may periodically be assignments outside the scope of the job description.

More than one intern may be needed in each category.

TIME AND PLACE

Tennessee World Affairs Council, 1513 Compton Avenue, Nashville, TN 37212; occasionally other campus and community locations.

At least 10 hours per week are required for the internship program. Hours and days are flexible and will be worked out according to the student’s academic schedule.

Commitment: Fall 2016 – August through December
