Confirmed by the U.S. Senate to this position in June, 2015 as Director of U.S. State Department Office of Foreign Missions, Gentry Smith is responsible for ensuring foreign diplomats comply with guidelines governing diplomatic privileges and immunities granted by the U.S. government, improving the treatment of U.S. missions and their personnel abroad, and providing service to the foreign diplomatic and consular community in the country in matters of tax, customs, property and motor vehicles.
Prior to this appointment, he served in the Bureau of Diplomatic Security as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Countermeasures, supervising the development of security standards and policies associated with U.S. diplomatic missions around the world.
Ambassador Smith entered the Department of State in 1987 and has been a career member of the Senior Foreign Service since 2006.
This public affairs event is part of the Tennessee World Affairs Council’s education programs to generate interest in our community to know more about the world and America’s global challenges. It is provided in association with Lipscomb University.
