2011 International Outreach Program Features Saudi Students
The Tennessee World Affairs Council is pleased to announce the first event of the 2011 International Outreach Program featuring the country of Saudi Arabia and the students of the Saudi Student Club of Tennessee Tech University. The opening program of this outreach project is “International Night,” an annual event of the Cookeville Breakfast Rotary Club, set for January 29, 2011 in Cookeville, Tennessee.
Event – The Future of American Diplomacy – A Conversation at Belmont (Nov 9)
How ready is the United States to deal with its many global challenges through the exercise of diplomacy? That’s the question being posed at a town hall meeting on America’s “Foreign Affairs for the Future,” featuring U.S. Ambassador George Staples. The program, hosted by Belmont University and the Tennessee World Affairs Council, is set for 6:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at the Inman Building on campus.

Students Confer with Foggy Bottom
Students from Belmont University had an opportunity to discuss the prospects for ratification of the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) with Assistant Secretary of State Rose Gottemoeller in a conference call on October 6, 2010. The opportunity was part of a State Department public outreach program aimed at sharing the Obama Administration’s vision for decreasing the threat of nuclear weapons in the world.
National Conference Scholarships for Students, Young Professionals – Time Sensitive
FABULOUS OPPORTUNITY – ACT NOW! — The Tennessee World Affairs Council is pleased to announce a program to send students and young professionals to the 2010 World Affairs Councils of America (WACA) Annual Conference in Washington, DC, November 4-5, 2010. The National Board of WACA is offering 25 scholarships to cover registration fees ($525) and a $1000 award to cover transportation and lodging.
Sessions on Diplomacy Set for November
The American Academy of Diplomacy (AAD), in cooperation with the World Affairs Councils of America, will provide a distinguished visiting speaker program in November featuring Ambassador George Staples. The program set for November 9-10 will highlight the AAD’s study on strengthening U.S. diplomacy. Among the events planned for Ambassador Staples visit is a student convocation at Belmont University and an evening presentation for the general public. Ambassador Staples, whose service included posting as the Director General of the Foreign Service, will also meet with area students to talk about careers in America’s diplomatic corps.
Portrait of Turkey Exhibit Set for Cookeville
The spectacular imagery of ancient and modern Turkey is the focus of an exhibition organized by the Tennessee World Affairs Council and set to open at the ART Upstairs Gallery in Cookeville with a reception 5-8 p.m., Friday, May 14, 2010. The event, called “Portrait of Turkey: A Photographic Journey,” is one feature of the Council’s teacher education program which sponsored Tennessee educators on summer study tours to Turkey over the last two years.
