Working in the World, Talk with Professionals About Global Jobs
College students and others can hear about preparation, experiences and the ups and downs of international affairs work.
Nashville, TN (March 27, 2019) – A “global job.” Just what is it? Do you want one? How do you get one? And what are the pluses and minuses?
Those are some of the questions panels organized by the Tennessee World Affairs Council will address with specialists from diplomacy, business, NGOs, government and the Intelligence Community. The Spring 2019 iteration of a highly favored job and career event organized by the Council will include back to back evenings at Belmont University in Nashville on April 8th and at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville on April 9th.
The panelists include: Ms. Vallera Gibson, US Foreign Service, Diplomat in Residence in Atlanta; Ms. Ann-Louise Colgan, Director of Public Education, U.S. Institute of Peace; Catherine Lay Miller, Executive Director, Project C.U.R.E. Nashville; Jim Shepherd, former President of Carlex, an international automotive supplier and Chairman of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce International Business Council; and Patrick Ryan, retired U.S. Navy Intelligence Officer, and former publisher of international affairs newsletters. The panel will be joined on April 9th at Tennessee Tech by Ms. Rosaura Mejia, an International Trade Coordinator with Averitt Express, Inc.
The panels at Belmont and Tennessee Tech are free and open to students from any college according to World Affairs Council President and panelist Patrick Ryan who said, “This is a great opportunity for students with any level of interest in global affairs to talk to people who have been there and done those jobs. He added, “We hope students from any campus will come and learn about the possibilities, not just in professions based abroad but state-side work that involves global affairs. There are an incredible number of positions working in the world.”
The panel will talk about issues such as: What advice would you give to yourself when in college? What skills do you think are particularly useful or necessary in your line of work? What is the work-life balance like in your career? What are some of the biggest challenges and rewards you have faced? There will be ample time for questions to the panel and for individual conversations when the formal presentations conclude.
