2022 World Affairs Council of the Year
Network of Independent World Affairs Councils of America

TNWAC Weekly | June 8-14

Greetings World Affairs Council Members and Friends:

The pivot from in-person programs to digital offerings continues this week with our News Review (Amb Dick Bowers and I) at a one-time new hour of 11 a.m. on Tuesday vice the regular 2 p.m. CT start. On Tuesday evening don’t miss “Global Nashville with Karl Dean” as former Mayor Dean talks with Amr El-Husseini about the “Future of Nashville’s Economy.” And on Wednesday we have a special episode of Global Dialogue where we’ll be talking about “Foreign Efforts Undermining Election 2020” — a critical American issue — with Rachael Dean Wilson and David Salvo from the bi-partisan Alliance for Securing Democracy, moderated by TNWAC’s own Mark Braden, a member of our Board.  Please share those program recommendations (and this email) with friends and colleagues.

I’d like to welcome to the Tennessee World Affairs Council Gillian Sjoblom who is joining our staff for the summer while school’s out at Wellesley College, one of America’s most respected higher education institutions. She just finished her Freshman year majoring in International Relations/Political Science. Gillian is a graduate of Nashville’s Hume-Fogg Academic HS where she was a TNWAC Academic WorldQuest champion in 2019. Gillian will be working to improve our external communications and to prepare the council for the 2020-2021 WorldQuest season. Welcome, Gillian.

Don’t forget to check the In Case You Missed It (ICYMI) list below. We have been fortunate to have had terrific guests and panelists on our Webinars over the last three months. All our Webinar videos are archived on Youtube.com/TNWAC and in Podcast form at SoundCloud.com/TNWAC. Also, be on the lookout for our weekly newsletter “Virtual Globe” which provides the weekly catalog of programs being offered by our sister councils in the WACA network. Enjoy!

Have a terrific week and please be safe and careful.

Patrick Ryan, President TNWAC

OUT AND ABOUT WITH WORLDDENVER

Tired of being cooped up? Check out our sister World Affairs Council in Denver. They have put together virtual trip snapshots that you can get engaged with in the kitchen and at cocktail hour. Here’s their program: While International travel is on hold due to COVID-19, the Council has created a bi-weekly Staycations Series, with virtual tours, recipes, and cocktail suggestions to replicate the experience of world travel and cross-cultural connection. The latest virtual trip is a “Return to Robben Island” to celebrate the life and work of freedom fighter Nelson Mandela. Previous editions included: “Brunch in Barcelona”, “Picnic at Machu Picchu”, and “Dessert in Dubai”.  | If you take up their offer to share your photos of recipes and cocktails also include them @TNWAC on social media.

DID YOU KNOW? BE A QUIZ PRIZE WINNER

World Affairs Council members are eligible to win the monthly “What in the World?” Quiz prize.  Subscribe to the newsletter to get the quiz every Monday morning — and be sure to be a member, to be in line for the prize.
