Hot Topics | Surveillance and the NSA – Gen. Hayden Conference Call

The World Affairs Councils of America’s “1918 Society” is hosting a “Hot Topics” conference call on Wednesday, August 7 (3:00pm-3:30pm EDT) with former CIA and former NSA director General Michael V. Hayden. The topic is “Understanding Data Surveillance, PRISM and the NSA.” The call is open to members of the WACA “1918 Society.”

Event | Celebrate International Human Rights Day!

International Human Rights Day occurs every year to commemorate the ratification of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations on Dec 10, 1948. In Tennessee, Human Rights Day has become a day to reflect and look at lessons learned and battles won, while various human rights groups join forces and commit to creating an even better future. Tennessee will celebrate Human Rights Day on Dec 10, 2012, in Nashville. The day begins at 2pm, with exhibits by area human rights organizations. Then at 4:30, the presentations and awards will begin. Speakers will discuss various human rights topics related to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Prize Update – 2013 Academic WorldQuest for High School Students

The Tennessee World Affairs Council will host the 2013 State Championship Match for Academic WorldQuest for high school students on February 23, 2013 at Belmont University. Today TN WAC is pleased to announce that through the generosity of an anonymous donor we are able to add a special prize at the competition for the 2nd place team — a Kindle Fire tablet for each of the four team members and the coach.

TN WAC Launches 2013 Academic WorldQuest for High School Students

This year marks the 3rd Tennessee Academic WorldQuest competition and the 11th Annual competition among the network of World Affairs Councils of America. The Tennessee State Championship match is set for February 23, 2013 at Belmont University in Nashville. The winning team from Tennessee will travel to Washington for the National Championship match at Georgetown University on April 27, 2013, as well as tours and visits to international affairs organizations in the nation’s capital.

The World Affairs Councils of America is proud to announce our Confirmed Speakers to date for the 2012 National Conference, U.S. National Security Policy: Six Top Issues for the President in 2013 (See list below). The conference commences at a very exciting time in Washington: one day after the election on Wednesday, November 7. Join us November 7-9, 2012 at the historic Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC for the launch of our network-wide discussion and analysis of the issues the President of the United States will face in 2013.

Event: March Symposium Focuses on Future of American Foreign Policy

United States Sen. Lamar Alexander; retired Gen. Wesley Clark; Jon Huntsman, the former Utah governor who has served as ambassador to Singapore and China and was a recent contender for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination; Vicente Fox, former president of Mexico, and Bill Richardson, a former governor of New Mexico who has served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and as secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy, will deliver public lectures at Vanderbilt University March 19-21 as part of the university’s annual Impact Symposium.
