TN WAC Launches 2013 Academic WorldQuest for High School Students
This year marks the 3rd Tennessee Academic WorldQuest competition and the 11th Annual competition among the network of World Affairs Councils of America. The Tennessee State Championship match is set for February 23, 2013 at Belmont University in Nashville. The winning team from Tennessee will travel to Washington for the National Championship match at Georgetown University on April 27, 2013, as well as tours and visits to international affairs organizations in the nation’s capital.
Global Cities: Two of Top Fifty in Tennessee
Nashville and Memphis are among the “Top 50 Cities for Global Trade” in the United States according to a special report in “Global Trade” magazine. The survey ranked cities by their export volume and some earned additional superlatives. Nashville came in at #41 with $5.7 billion in international exports, with Canada, Mexico and Saudi Arabia ranking among the top international markets. Memphis ranked #24, with much of its $11.1 billion in export business being done with Camada, Mexico and China. Memphis also earned the superlative “Best Logistics Infrastructure.” The excerpts for Memphis and Nashville follow below. The Tennessee World Affairs Council is pleased to be among the organizations co-sponsoring a symposium examining international trade and investment in Nashville. The event is Belmont University’s 3rd Annual Center for International Business (CIB) Symposium and is set for this Thursday, March 29, 2012.
Event: March Symposium Focuses on Future of American Foreign Policy
United States Sen. Lamar Alexander; retired Gen. Wesley Clark; Jon Huntsman, the former Utah governor who has served as ambassador to Singapore and China and was a recent contender for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination; Vicente Fox, former president of Mexico, and Bill Richardson, a former governor of New Mexico who has served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and as secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy, will deliver public lectures at Vanderbilt University March 19-21 as part of the university’s annual Impact Symposium.
The “Foreign Policy” Debate – Dr. Lori Murray
The Tennessee World Affairs Council is pleased to share an essay by Dr. Lori Murray, President and CEO of the World Affairs Councils of America, which addresses a critical lack of attention among American citizens and politicians to international affairs. She correctly points out that there is no separation between domestic and foreign affairs in “our indisputably interconnected world.”
Event – The Future of American Diplomacy – A Conversation at Belmont (Nov 9)
How ready is the United States to deal with its many global challenges through the exercise of diplomacy? That’s the question being posed at a town hall meeting on America’s “Foreign Affairs for the Future,” featuring U.S. Ambassador George Staples. The program, hosted by Belmont University and the Tennessee World Affairs Council, is set for 6:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at the Inman Building on campus.
Students Confer with Foggy Bottom
Students from Belmont University had an opportunity to discuss the prospects for ratification of the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) with Assistant Secretary of State Rose Gottemoeller in a conference call on October 6, 2010. The opportunity was part of a State Department public outreach program aimed at sharing the Obama Administration’s vision for decreasing the threat of nuclear weapons in the world.
