Ambassador Samantha Power may have been an unlikely representative of the United States to the United Nations. Born in Ireland, war-correspondent in the Balkans, Pulitzer Prize winning author of a critical look at America’s responses to genocides, journalist reporting from global trouble spots. Power brought her passion for human rights in foreign policy to the corridors of the White House in the Obama Administration serving first as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights at the NSC. In August 2013 she became the 28thUnited States Ambassador to the United Nations, leading America’s diplomacy in the world’s top multilateral institution and a member of President Obama’s cabinet.

Ambassador Power’s three and a half years at the United Nations saw America navigating some of the most complex global challenges: transformation in US-Russian relations, dealing with a rising China, post-Arab spring turmoil in the Middle East, the Ebola crisis in West Africa and other thorny issues she navigated in her UN Security Council seat that still confront America.

In September 2019 Ambassador Power’s memoir, “The Education of an Idealist,” will be published and she will be joining us on October 13that a World Affairs Council luncheon and book signing to discuss her journey from Castlenock, Ireland to the United Nations Security Council chamber and your questions about global affairs issues. Dr. Thomas Schwartz, professor of history at Vanderbilt University, and a specialist in U.S. foreign affairs history, will moderate the conversation with Ambassador Power.

Your lunch ticket includes a splendid buffet meal at Belmont University’s Frist Lecture Hall and a copy of Samantha Power’s book.  Join us Sunday, October 13that 11:00 for this special opportunity for hard to come by insights and perspectives on the UN, U.S. foreign policy and a unique personality in American diplomacy.

Frist Lecture Hall is located in the Inman Health Sciences Building. There is unground parking in the Inman building near the corner of Wedgewood Avenue and 15th Avenue South.  Once parked take the elevator to the 4th floor and you’ll have arrived at the Frist Lecture Hall.
