Iran’s Upcoming Presidential Election – Briefing Paper

On May 19th the next president of the Islamic Republic of Iran will be selected from among six candidates — from over 1,600 names that were put forward — in an election that will be important for Iranians on a host of domestic issues and for the future direction of Iranian foreign policy.  At stake is: the balance of power in Tehran, the “Supreme Leader’s” succession, the nuclear accord signed between Iran and the international community, and the troubled economic situation, according to a new briefing paper published by the Iran Project.

Last September the World Affairs Council in association with the Iran Project hosted distinguished American Ambassador Thomas R. Pickering for a town hall and visits to classrooms and community programs in Nashville.  He talked about US-Iran relations and the Iran nuclear deal — the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).  [You can find links to related reports below.]
