At least twice a year the World Affairs Council assembles diplomats, business people, NGO officials, returned Peace Corps volunteers and more to talk about their experiences and insights and to answer your questions at this very popular panel. For the 2019-2020 season we will have at least two panels: fall at Lipscomb University and spring at Belmont University.

FALL 2019 PANEL
Atlee Tyree
Returned Peace Corps Volunteer
Born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas, Atlee has always had a passion for international travel and cross-cultural dialogue. She graduated from Emory University with a degree in Art History and African Studies, and shortly thereafter, she joined the U.S. Peace Corps to teach English in Ukraine. After nearly 3 years in Ukraine, she returned to the U.S. and moved to Nashville to earn a master’s degree in Community Development Action from Vanderbilt. While in Nashville, Atlee has worked primarily with immigrant-serving nonprofits and currently works as the Community Achieves Site Manager at Haywood Elementary School. She also does community engagement for Friends of Mill Ridge Park, the new 600-acre regional park in southeast Davidson County.
Todd Hudson
U.S. Secret Service
A native of Germantown, Tennessee, Special Agent Hudson began his career with the United States Secret Service in 1993 at the New York Field Office, before being transferred in 2000 to the Vice Presidential Protective Division in Washington, D.C. Three years later, he entered the agency’s supervisory ranks. He returned to the field in 2005 as an Assistant to the Special Agent in Charge in the Los Angeles Field Office. In 2008 he was assigned as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge of Congressional Affairs before later serving as the Executive Assistant to the Director back in Washington, D.C. He has served as the the Special Agent in Charge of the Secret Service’s Nashville Field Office since April 2012. Special Agent Hudson received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and a MBA from the University of Notre Dame.
Cameron Manning – Consulate General of Japan in Nashville – Cultural Programs Coordinator (JET Alumni)
Cameron Manning is the Cultural Programs Coordinator at the Consulate-General of Japan in Nashville. In her role, she assists in the coordination of Japanese festivals and events as well as Japanese cultural outreach to educational institutions and the general public. After earning her undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Cameron moved to Shiga Prefecture, Japan to teach English under the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program from 2009 to 2011. She has been at the Consulate since 2013.
Matthew W. Espenshade
Former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
Prior to joining Cumberland University’s faculty in 2019, Mr. Espenshade enjoyed a 24 year career as a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). In his last assignment, Mr. Espenshade led the FBI’s Nashville office. In this executive leadership position, Mr. Espenshade directed the operations, intelligence, and administrative activity of approximately 100 employees throughout middle Tennessee.
During his career in the FBI, Mr. Espenshade served as Legal Attaché in Budapest, Hungary and Nairobi, Kenya where he had responsibility for seven countries in east Africa (Kenya, Somalia, Uganda, Burundi, Tanzania, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Republic of the Congo). In these positions, he was part of the Ambassador’s senior staff and the liaison officer to each country’s national police force. Over the course of his career, Mr. Espenshade responded to dozens of terrorism attacks, to include the Westgate Mall attack in Nairobi, Kenya in 2013, and the kidnapping of American citizens in Somalia. Mr. Espenshade’s foreign assignments include a counterterrorism deployment to Afghanistan in 2003.
Mr. Espenshade’s other FBI assignments include supervisory and investigative positions in Texas and New York City. These experiences encompassed investigations of international terrorism, violent crime, public corruption, narcotics trafficking, organized crime, civil rights, and sophisticated fraud schemes. He was a primary investigator in the 1998 bombings of the United States embassies in Kenya and Tanzania which led to the indictment of Usama bin Laden. Over the course of his career, Mr. Espenshade was awarded the FBI Director’s Award for Excellence in International Operations, the National Intelligence Meritorious Unit Citation awarded for outstanding performance in the investigation and ultimate recovery of a kidnapped hostage in Somalia, and the Brigadier General Richard T. Ellis Award for Excellence in collaboration within the U.S. intelligence community. Mr. Espenshade was also the recipient of numerous other awards for exceptional investigative and leadership accomplishments over the course of his career with the FBI and military that exceeded a 30-year period of time.
Prior to joining the FBI, Mr. Espenshade served a Military Intelligence officer in the U.S. Army. He has a B.S. from Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, PA and M.S. in Organizational Leadership from Norwich University in Northfield, VT. Mr. Espenshade is married to Lisa Espenshade, who is also an educator with a 20 year career of teaching both science and special education in schools throughout the United States and international schools in Africa and Europe. They have four school-aged children, Matalyn, Ava, Ella, and Seth. Mr. Espenshade is an elder at the Journey Church in Lebanon, TN where he teaches children’s classes and leads an adult small group bible study.
Leslee T. Alexander
Executive Director, Tennessee International Trade Center at Tennessee Small Business Development Centers (TSBDC)
Mrs. Leslee T. Alexander is the Executive Director of the Tennessee International Trade Center. She oversees the day-to-day activities and fund development of the program, while export counselors advise small and medium sized businesses and help them grow their export activity through market research, financing, and incentives. Mrs. Alexander brings federal, regional and local practitioners together to collaborate and assure an efficient delivery of resources, all with a focus on rural small-and-medium-sized enterprises. She has led delegations to Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Hong Kong, Hungary, Israel, Italy, the UK, Ireland, Peru and Japan The Netherlands, United Arab Emirates. She has more than 20 years of experience in international marketing and communications, business development, and domestic regional planning. The TN-ITC is a collaboration of Tennessee State University, the Small Business Administration and the State of Tennessee.
We encourage students from all schools and colleges to attend to learn more about the opportunities to work in a variety of occupations in global affairs, including diplomacy, business, military and international service.
