The United States and Iran have flirted with conflict since the 1979 Islamic Revolution often resulting in direct combat as during the 1980s “Tanker War.”  The country again found itself headed toward conflict with the cancellation of U.S. participation in the Iran nuclear deal, the JCPOA. In recent months tensions were ratcheted up with Washington’s “Maximum Pressure” campaign and Tehran’s attacks and seizures of merchant vessels and downing of an American UAV in waters near Iran. Now there’s a causes belli between American ally Saudi Arabia and Iran following the devastating attacks against strategic oil installations in the Kingdom. Whether the strikes originated from Iranian forces or Iranian backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, as claimed, it is apparent the United States and Iran are closer than ever to a military showdown.

Join us for this timely and insightful Global Dialogue conversation with career U.S. Foreign Service Officer Amb Charles Bowers and career Navy Intelligence Officer LCDR Patrick Ryan to dissect the crisis, looking at the background and context of the diplomatic and military moves that inform us about the potential for conflict and the consequences.
