Biographical Information

Tian Deyou is the economic and commercial minister counselor at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to the United States.

Before his present assignment, he worked as the deputy director general of the Department of American and Oceanian Affairs in China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM). From 2001 to 2012, he was posted in the Chinese Consulate Generals in Chicago and San Francisco as the consul and director of the economic and commercial offices. His present post in Washington,DC, is his fourth diplomatic assignment.

Tian started his governmental career in 1984 at the Department of American and Oceanian Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, MOFCOM’s predecessor, where he was responsible for economic and trade relations between China and Caribbean countries.

In the late 1980s, he worked as a commercial attaché at the Chinese Embassy in Rome, Italy for 4 years. From 1994 to 2001, he served in the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation as senior assistant to former Vice Minister Sun Zhenyu, who later became the first Chinese Ambassador to the World Trade Organization in Geneva.

Tian graduated from the Beijing Institute of Foreign Trade in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. In 1985 he completed the international market training program at Trinity College in Ireland, and in 2001, earned his EMBA at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. He is married and has a daughter.
