World Affairs Council News – Week of Dec 10-16, 2018

Week of December 10, 2018

Dear Members and Friends,

Good day from the Tennessee World Affairs Council.

Shopping sprees, mall Santas and WorldQuest. It’s that time of the year. Last week the World Affairs Council kicked off the 2018-19 Academic WorldQuest competition with a practice match at Knowledge Academies of Nashville.  We thank the teachers, parents and students who came out for a Sunday afternoon of WorldQuest questions that will sharpen their preparations for the February 24th Tennessee Championship match at Belmont University. It’s not too late for teams to signup — see below.

Are you among the 67 million Americans who listen to Podcasts at least monthly? We have one more to add to your subscription list.  The Council’s “Global Tennessee” Podcast launched in October and we are on an every two weeks schedule for the regular show — a roundtable of news and commentary — and a conversation with newsmakers and thought leaders. While there are many global affairs Podcasts available we aim for Global Tennessee to bring international affairs to the local level. In addition to the regular Podcast we’ll publish special editions as we have done with Senator Bob Corker’s TNWAC program and longer interviews with distinguished visiting speakers and others.  You can subscribe to “Global Tennessee” on your smart phone and find more on iTunes and Soundcloud. See you on the Pod.  Businesses, interested in sponsoring?

Holiday gift giving ideas just got easier with the TNWAC membership gift program. You can give the world to your family and friends with a one-year membership to the Council, providing benefits like members’ only events, discounts on ticketed programs and publications and other special access opportunities.  Later this week we’ll open up a new gift opportunity — give someone special a seat at a private dinner on February 11th with “Ploughshares” President Joseph Cirincione, for an insightful conversation about global nuclear proliferation and a sumptuous dinner at Stony River Grill.  Stay tuned.

Lastly, please keep the World Affairs Council in mind as you think about your end-of-year charitable giving. We keep the lights on and programs rolling through your support — memberships and donations. The Council is a 501c3 tax exempt organization that does not receive government support. We rely on you to make what you see here possible.  Check out www.TNWAC.org/donate.

Have a great week.

“Preventing nuclear catastrophe is one of the greatest challenges of our time, and although the world has made progress on nuclear security since the Cold War, we all know that the work of nuclear security is never done,” according to the Nuclear Threat Initiative’s Co-Chair and Former Senator Sam Nunn. And there is no one who knows more about global nuclear proliferation than Joseph Cirincione, President of Ploughshares and long-time Washington policy maker.
