Hot Topics | Surveillance and the NSA – Gen. Hayden Conference Call
The World Affairs Councils of America’s “1918 Society” is hosting a “Hot Topics” conference call on Wednesday, August 7 (3:00pm-3:30pm EDT) with former CIA and former NSA director General Michael V. Hayden. The topic is “Understanding Data Surveillance, PRISM and the NSA.” The call is open to members of the WACA “1918 Society.”

The conference commences at a very exciting time in Washington: one day after the election on Wednesday, November 7. The Tennessee World Affairs Council is pleased to share an essay by Dr. Lori Murray, President and CEO of the World Affairs Councils of America, which addresses a critical lack of attention among American citizens and politicians to international affairs. She correctly points out that there is no separation between domestic and foreign affairs in “our indisputably interconnected world.”

The National Conference of the World Affairs Councils of America was held in Washington, DC, on Thursday and Friday (Nov 4-5, 2010). The scope and depth of the agenda (“U.S. Foreign Policy: Into the Next Decade”) and the quality of the speakers was remarkable. We’re pleased to note that the Friday sessions were recorded by CSPAN and are available on their web site (Links below). Additional materials from the conference including some transcripts and a complete set of audio recordings of the keynote addresses and plenary sessions will be available shortly.
National Conference Scholarships for Students, Young Professionals – Time Sensitive
FABULOUS OPPORTUNITY – ACT NOW! — The Tennessee World Affairs Council is pleased to announce a program to send students and young professionals to the 2010 World Affairs Councils of America (WACA) Annual Conference in Washington, DC, November 4-5, 2010. The National Board of WACA is offering 25 scholarships to cover registration fees ($525) and a $1000 award to cover transportation and lodging.
National Conference Update
The World Affairs Councils of America is hosting the annual conference in Washington on November 3-5, 2010 at the Mayflower Hotel. Ambassador Marc Grossman, WACA Chairman, announced today news of additions to the already impressive lineup of speakers. Director of the White House National Economic Council, Larry Summers, will be the keynote speaker at the Friday evening (Nov 5) closing dinner. Deputy Secretary of State Jim Steinberg will be the keynote speaker at the Friday morning session. The agenda already contains many speakers who will provide informative, provocative and useful information for all.

The 2010 National Conference of the World Affairs Councils of America, “U.S. Foreign Policy: Into the Next Decade,” will be held November 4-5 at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC. A council staff workshop will be held on November 3rd. The World Affairs Councils of America’s National Conference, held annually for over a decade, has earned a reputation as the place to meet and mingle with some of the most well-regarded national and international personalities and policymakers.
