Distinguished Speaker Program: The Changing Middle East – Nov 13
Join us for a special presentation of the Council’s Distinguished Visiting Speaker Program on November 13th. — The “Arab Spring” and the challenge it presents to American foreign policy and interests across North Africa and the Near East has raised new and complicated questions jumping out of the headlines. There could be no timelier topic for us to discuss than the tension between America and the Arab and Islamic worlds. We seek to understand these developments and how they impact U.S. interests in these important regions. Join us for an insightful presentation by renowned Professor Richard Bulliett as he explores “Political Authority in a Changing Middle East.” He comes to the Tennessee World Affairs Council through a grant by the Carnegie Corporation in association with the World Affairs Councils of America.
Save the Date: International Night 2013 – Cookeville
The Tennessee World Affairs Council is pleased to announce it will partner with the Cookeville Breakfast Rotary Club to organize the 4th Annual International Night on Saturday, January 26, 2013. This year’s honored country is Japan, following on celebrations that featured India, Saudi Arabia and Germany. Mark your calendars for that date and plan to join TNWAC and Cookeville Rotarians at a great event that will include a reception, dinner and cultural entertainment. International Night is set for 5:30-9:00 p.m. at the Clarion Inn, Cookeville for January 26, 2013. We will see you there.
Global Cities: Two of Top Fifty in Tennessee
Nashville and Memphis are among the “Top 50 Cities for Global Trade” in the United States according to a special report in “Global Trade” magazine. The survey ranked cities by their export volume and some earned additional superlatives. Nashville came in at #41 with $5.7 billion in international exports, with Canada, Mexico and Saudi Arabia ranking among the top international markets. Memphis ranked #24, with much of its $11.1 billion in export business being done with Camada, Mexico and China. Memphis also earned the superlative “Best Logistics Infrastructure.” The excerpts for Memphis and Nashville follow below. The Nashville Cordell Hull Chapter of the United Nations Association-USA announced the annual spring meeting and dinner set for April 17 featuring Vanderbilt University Professor of Law Michael Newton speaking on “International Tribunals: From Eichmann to Gadhafi.”
Tennessee WorldQuest Champs: Montgomery Bell Academy
Congratulations to the Montgomery Bell Academy Academic WorldQuest team on their victory in the 2012 Tennessee State Championship match today. Team members Jake Simons, John Mellow, McKay Proctor and Will Stewart, and coach Annie Williams will represent Tennessee at the World Affairs Councils of America national competition for WorldQuest at Georgetown University in Washington, DC on April 21, 2012. Well done to all the competitors today including teams from Cookeville High School, Stratford STEM Magnet High School, Hillsboro High School and Martin Luther King, Jr., Magnet High School.
