Ambassador Charles R. (Dick) Bowers is a Nashville resident who was a career member of the U.S. Foreign Service and served as U.S. Ambassador to Bolivia from 1991 to 1994.

He began his diplomatic career in 1967 and served as a diplomatic officer in American embassies in Panama, Poland, Singapore and Germany. He also served a number of tours of duty in the Department of State in several capacities including as Executive Assistant to the Under Secretary for Management, Executive Director of the Bureau of European Affairs and special assistant to the Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Following his service as Ambassador, Dick retired from the Foreign Service. The following year, in 1996, he began his next adventures. He hiked the full length of the Appalachian Trail and climbed the highest peaks in all 50 states. Well acquainted by then with America’s natural beauty, Dick chose to make his home in the most stunning area, middle Tennessee. He and his wife Kay have lived in Nashville since 2006.

In addition to serving on the Board of the Nashville Chapter of the United Nations Association, he is also an active member of Rotary and, from 2011-2011 served its Governor of District 6760.
