Dear Members and Friends of the Tennessee World Affairs Council:

This is the most critical time in the history of our organization and one of the most important times in the history of the nation for our citizens to be aware of what’s going on in the world. The partisan divide in the country and the focus of the political campaigns on domestic issues does not lessen the importance of the many festering troubles around the world that impact American security and prosperity.

In keeping with our World Affairs Council’s vision of a “well informed community that thinks critically about the world and the impact of global events” we offer for your consideration and participation an incredibly ambitious calendar of global affairs programs for our Fall calendar.

Our programs center around the ELECTION 2020 PROJECT, a collection of panel discussions featuring prominent thought-leaders, decision-makers, analysts and scholars to address the key issues American citizens should know as they prepare to cast their ballots for national offices and our Congressional representatives — the leaders who will be charged with navigating America’s path in the world.

The slate of panelists continued to be filled with insightful and thoughtful speakers but we’re pleased to announce the inaugural Election 2020 program will feature former Secretary of Defense William Perry and Tom Collina, Director of Policy at Ploughshares Fund. They’ll talk about the risks and responsibilities associates with the singular authority of American presidents to order the release of nuclear weapons. They’ll address that question on August 24th.

The Election 2020 panels, like all of our Fall 2020 programs, will be delivered via Zoom Webinars that will include you in the audience and we’ll be ready to take on your questions for our speakers.

In addition to the Election 2020 panels we will continue with our “GLOBAL NASHVILLE WITH KARL DEAN” Webinars on every other Tuesday evening starting on September 1st. As always we welcome members of our business community to support that program through your sponsorship.

Every Wednesday at 1pm, starting on August 25th, you will be informed and entertained by Ambassador Dick Bowers, Dr. Breck Walker and me, in our GLOBAL NEWS REVIEW, bringing you an examination of the top issues of the day through the lenses of diplomacy, scholarship and intelligence.

On October 8th students and young professionals will be able to talk with five professionals from government, diplomacy, business, NGOs and the legal fields in our semi-annual INTERNATIONAL CAREERS AND JOBS PANEL. A side benefit of virtual programs is the ability to reach an audience well beyond our usual Nashville meeting rooms. Don’t miss this terrific program that is usually one of the best attended TNWAC programs.

This Fall, in view of the Presidential Election cycle, TNWAC will offer two evenings to get together for networking, fellowship and following breaking news at both the October 22nd Presidential debate at Belmont University and the November 3rd Election Day. We’ll gather in a Zoom meeting for these WATCH PARTIES. Full details and activities are still under development — suggestions welcome.

The ACADEMIC WORLDQUEST high school global affairs awareness competition will be off to a new full-season in September. Our regular schedule will include a December practice round for teams to fine-tune their WorldQuest skills and our annual championship match in February. We’ll have details for this 2020/2021 WorldQuest season shortly, but teachers and students can look forward to another great WorldQuest season.

We will continue to collaborate with the World Affairs Councils of America national office in Washington to bring you their programs, “Cover to Cover” and “Know Now,” teleconferences that bring author of global affairs books and specialists on key topics on the international landscape. These opportunities will be added to our calendar as they’re announced.

We are also collaborating with six other World Affairs Council from the national network on a special two-evening program, a “COVID-19 COMPLEXITIES: GLOBAL TOWN HALL.” We are presenting a keynote by Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel followed by panels with journalists from the network of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and associated services on the topic of “Covid in the Developing World.” The second evening will feature public health specialists, pharmaceutical industry representatives and other leaders in the field, addressing, “COVID-19: Global Response and the Future.” TNWAC is proud to be a key player in the production of this special broadcast.

Lastly, your World Affairs Council will continue bringing you terrific programs from our sister World Affairs Councils and our community partners, like the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce’s International Business Council. You’ll find these on our calendar and we’ll announce them as they occur.

I can’t sign off without mentioning that bringing you an incredible lineup of programs like this one cannot continue into the future without your support.

We all know this is a tough time for nonprofit organizations. In our case we continue to survive on a very modest budget with our funds being prudently managed to give you the most bang for the buck. You’d be hard pressed to find a nonprofit organization that produces as much quality programming per dollar in the bank as your World Affairs Council. So, what that means is that we need you to BECOME A MEMBER TODAY or to MAKE A GIFT TO THE TNWAC TODAY.

Thank you for your support and for your interest in you and your fellow citizens becoming more informed about world affairs.

Best wishes for a safe and hopeful remainder of 2020.
