The film is illustrated with previously unpublished recordings of Wagnerians made during the fighting on the Ukrainian front and the recruitment process of Wagnerians in Russian prisons documented with hidden cameras. \nAbout David Kaiser \nDavid Kaiser is a medical specialist and volunteer who helps facilitate treatment for Ukrainian military and civilian casualties in Poland and in Ukraine\, especially amputees\, through an array of organizations supporting the humanitarian needs of victims of the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine. \nKaiser is a former Captain Infantry\, United States Army\, 1968-1971\, served as Combat military advisor to the Vietnamese\, psychological operations\, and instructor in tactics and jungle warfare. Team leader- Mobile Advisory Team I-19\, 1969-1970\, Que Son\, Viet Nam. He brings comprehensive “know how” in the development and operations of new medical initiatives. Mr. Kaiser has developed and operated integrated health care delivery systems including for Health Maintenance Organisations (HMO)\, Consolidated Medical Group Practices\, Hospitals\, and Medical Marketing in the USA\, Central and Eastern Europe. Medical delivery\, physician governance and reimbursement mechanisms continue to evolve into comprehensive and complicated systems. Mr. Kaiser has been influential in implementing many comprehensive delivery initiatives into the infrastructure where health delivery is a major concern. \nBackground \nWith the beginning of the war in Ukraine\, including the armed military response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine\, global leaders have partnered to support a significant increase in wartime injuries and casualties. Individuals with polytrauma and major limb amputation constitute one of the most severe injuries. \nReports from the Ministry of Health\, Ukraine confirms that 500+ soldiers\, civilians\, and children with limb amputations need prosthetic\, orthotic\, and mental health care. An immediate need has been identified for the development of programs to support these individuals with complex polytrauma. This includes individuals with two or more “trauma” diagnoses\, including but not limited to major limb amputation\, traumatic brain injury\, spinal cord injury\, and emotional\, physiological\, and psychological trauma. \nWhile many military casualties and trauma instances are known\, we know many civilian adults and children who have also experienced severe trauma\, including loss of a limb\, other life-altering injuries\, and psychological trauma. \nOpportunity \nEncouraged the Ministry of Health\, Ukraine (which is responsible for wartime rehabilitation)\, The Ukrainian National Guard\, Baylor College of Medicine\, the Polish government healthcare system\, and ‘Alliance for Innovation (AFI)\, a US/Polish entity focused on healthcare delivery and trauma treatment\, have established a rehabilitation center of excellence in Poland to manage short and long-term patient care. \nBaylor’s team includes experts from Center for Prosthetic & Orthotic Care and Clinical Innovation\, the H. Ben Taub Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation\, and the Center for Global Health. AFI’s team includes medical professionals\, retired military experts\, logistic experts\, and Not for Profit (NPO) staff. \nThis opportunity has resulted in an advanced team to establish the prosthetic and rehabilitation components various settings in Poland that will be set to treat individuals with amputation\, polytrauma\, PTSD\, and other rehab needs. \n• Long-term care will be coordinated with local prosthetists and orthotists from Poland and Ukraine\, with Baylor’s clinicians working closely with the local teams\, including Ottobock Poland (global prosthetic company)\, to address the acute and long-term challenges. \n• Establishing a state-of-the-art clinic and laboratory will be designed to provide the best available care to the victims of the war in Ukraine and the surrounding regions. \n• The operational team includes academic faculty and clinicians\, military operation specialist\, wartime physicians\, and local/global leaders with support from the Ukrainian and Polish Ministries of Health\, the Ukrainian National Guard\, and multiple governmental\, humanitarian\, NPOs\, academic\, and private organizations. \n• This center will originate in Poland’s CSK MSWiA (Sziptala Kliniczznego Ministry of Interior Hospital) located in Warsaw. It will provide prosthetic\, orthotic\, psychological\, physical medicine\, orthopedics\, musculoskeletal\, and polytrauma rehab in line with these specialties and targeted therapies for rehabilitation and restoration. \n• Other hospitals and rehabilitation facilities in addition to the one in Warsaw have offered their services. \nOther Involvement and Support: \nAugust Mission provided logistical support\, and Operation Walk Chicago offered to provide wheelchairs for the patients. Also\, the Virginia Commonwealth University and Denver\, Colorado’s Craig Hospital for Traumatic Brain Injury/Neurological Disorder\, and others may send volunteers\, while the University of Massachusetts’ Spalding Rehabilitation Center may provide a telemedicine solution to the project. \nThe first patients arrived in Warsaw in mid-November 2022 and were immediately housed in a hotel annex on the hospital campus. \nThe first two soldiers lost their left arms during combat operations in March and April\, 2022 in Mariupol. The leaders discussed their mutual interests in the context of the world of 1945\, but the longstanding conventional thinking about the relationship was not the basis for building ties. So says Professor David Des Roches\, Army combat veteran\, who served numerous tours in the Middle East and now specializes in the Arabian Peninsula at the Defense Department’s Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies. He notes there’s a shortfall in the knowledge of the history of America’s security interests with the Kingdom. \nThe lack of detail in that knowledge is a point also made by Commodore Abdulateef al Mulhim who served a career in the Royal Saudi Navy and who is a consultant and commentator on global affairs\, especially the U.S.-Saudi relationship. The deep ties and shared interests\, he says\, are little understood as he points to the successful partnership in the Cold War\, in tackling regional security challenges and in serving as a reliable provider of global energy resources. Mulhim\, who received his undergraduate education at the State University of New York Maritime College\, notes that the liberation of Kuwait and other American military operations in the region would not have been possible with the close partnership. \nThe U.S.-Saudi ties span many dimensions: political\, military\, economic\, cultural\, academic and more. However\, the conversation in the U.S. about America’s relationship with Saudi Arabia is generally focused on leadership issues. Former American Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Chas Freeman likened it to a marriage that had its ups and downs but had staying power based on the mutual benefit. The national security partnership\, said Des Roches\, was very good\, adding\, until Jamal Khashoggi. The brutal murder of the journalist put the conduct of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the spotlight amid accusations he ordered the crime. The White House has worked to move forward but a number of issues remain. Des Roches is Associate Professor at the Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies (NESA) at National Defense University\, where he specializes in countries of the Arabian Peninsula\, Gulf Cooperation Council Regional Security\, Border Security\, Weapons Transfers\, Missile Defense\, Counterinsurgency\, Terrorism and emerging trends. \nHe joined NESA in 2011 after serving the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Policy in numerous positions\, including as Director of the Gulf and Arabian Peninsula\, the DoD liaison to the Department of Homeland Security\, the Senior Country Director for Pakistan\, the NATO Operations Director (where he drafted the NATO comprehensive approach directive)\, the Deputy Director for Peacekeeping\, and the spokesman for the Defense Security Cooperation Agency.  Prior to that\, he served in the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy as an International Law Enforcement Analyst and Special Assistant for Strategy. \nProfessor Des Roches has lectured at the Qatari Staff College\, the Saudi War College\, and is the author of numerous articles and chapters on Gulf security. Prior to her selection as the Assistant Director\, she served as the USMC Intelligence Mission Manager and advised the DCI\, the DIRINT\, and the Marine Corps Intelligence\, Surveillance\, and Reconnaissance Enterprise (MCISRE) on all aspects of strategic\, operational\, and tactical intelligence\, including current and future programs. While on a Joint Duty Assignment with the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA)\, Ms. Gardner was the Deputy Research Director for Military Capabilities from September 2018-September 2019 and from February 2017 to August 2018\, she served at the Mission Manager for Europe Eurasia at DIA. From October 2019 to October 2020 Ms. Gardner spent a year on active duty as a Navy Commander as a Defense Liaison to the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defense-Intelligence at RAF Wyton’s Pathfinder Five Eyes Facility. Prior to joining DIA on a Joint Duty Assignment in February 2017\, she was the Senior Advisor to the Director of Intelligence for Analysis and Production\, Headquarters Marine Corps. In that position she represented the Marine Corps as the senior intelligence analyst and provided policy and management guidance on intelligence analysis and production in order to assist the Director of Intelligence in the conduct of Service Intelligence activities within the Marine Corps\, Defense\, and National Intelligence Communities. \nMs. Gardner was selected as a Defense Intelligence Senior Leader (DISL) in September 2011. She was assigned to the Marine Corps Intelligence Activity (MCIA) from 2000-2010 where she held various analytic and leadership positions including threat analysis and regional specialist. She was commissioned in 2003 after having served 10 years as an enlisted Marine Corps intelligence specialist in the Marine Corps Reserve. She received her Intelligence Community Officer designation in 2009. \nSafa Shahwan Edwards \nSafa Shahwan Edwards is the deputy director of the Atlantic Council’s Cyber Statecraft Initiative under the Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFRLab). In this role\, she manages the administration and external communications of the Initiative\, as well as the Cyber 9/12 Strategy Challenge\, the Initiative’s global cyber policy and strategy competition. \nSafa holds an MA in International Affairs with a concentration in Conflict Resolution from the George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs and a BA in Political Science from Miami University of Ohio. Safa is of Bolivian and Jordanian heritage and speaks Spanish and Arabic. \n\nMaureen Page \nDISL\, Research Director\, Defense Intelligence Agency \nMs. Page leads the planning\, execution\, and oversight of intelligence research and analytic tradecraft within the Directorate for Analysis. She oversees the development of analytic tradecraft guidance\, leads analytic outreach programs\, guides DIA’s product evaluation and analytic lessons learned efforts\, and develops the Defense Intelligence Enterprise’s Program of Analysis. The Kurds have sought to carve out their own state amid the turmoil of unfolding regional history. They’ve been gassed and chased into the mountains by Saddam Hussein and attacked by the dangerous terror group ISIS. The Kurds have stood up courageously against their opponents. \nThe Iraqi Kurds and the United States have had a long history of cooperation and sadly\, at times\, abandonment. The aspirations of the people of Kurdistan took shape in the 2017 independence referendum as the coalition battle against ISIS was winding down. The referendum won with 92% of Kurds voting to free the region from Baghdad’s authority. However\, the central government through a Supreme Court ruling\, quashed the initiative. The KRG continues its close relationship with Washington as it continues to navigate a tough neighborhood\, wedged among its Iraqi neighbors and Turkey\, Iran and Syria. The KRG has been very well represented in Washington by the Hon. Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman. Join us. \n\nBayan Sami Abdul Rahman \nKurdistan Regional Government Representative to the United States \nBayan Sami Abdul Rahman is the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Representative to the United States of America. \nKey to her role are strengthening ties between Kurdistan and the United States\, advocating her government’s position on a wide array of political\, security\, humanitarian\, economic\, and cultural matters and promoting coordination and partnership. Prior to her US appointment in 2015\, Ms. Abdul Rahman was the High Representative to the United Kingdom. She was elected to the Leadership Council of the Kurdistan Democratic Party in 2010. \nBefore her career in public service\, Ms. Abdul Rahman worked as a journalist for 17 years. She began her career on local newspapers in London and won the Observer Newspaper’s Farzad Bazoft Memorial Prize in 1993\, which led her to work at The Observer and later at the Financial Times. She worked for the FT in Britain and in Japan\, where she was Tokyo Correspondent. \nHer late father\, Sami Abdul Rahman\, was a veteran of the Kurdish freedom movement\, joining the Kurdistan Democratic Party in 1963 and playing a critical leadership role in the Kurdish and Iraqi opposition to Saddam Hussein’s regime. He held the post of Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government and General Secretary of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP). Sami Abdul Rahman was killed alongside his elder son Salah and 96 others in a twin suicide bombing in 2004. \nMs. Abdul Rahman was born in Baghdad. Her family briefly lived in Iran in the mid-1970s before moving to Britain in 1976. She is a history graduate from London University. \nPatrick W. Ryan \nPatrick Ryan is founding President of the Tennessee World Affairs Council (2007). He served in the U.S. Navy for 26 years (1972-1998) as a Submariner\, Surface Warfare Officer and Intelligence Officer. Ryan founded Ryan & Associates\, a publisher of newsletters on international affairs (1999-2015). Anna contributed and led the comprehensive school reform in Ukraine\, as well as was a leader of the higher education funding reform. Currently Anna leads various projects that aim at education access renewal in Ukraine amidst the war. \nElena and Madeleine Byrd \nMother-daughter duo\, Mrs. Elena and Dr. Madeleine Byrd have spent most of the past year volunteering in Warsaw\, Poland\, providing humanitarian aid and medical services to Ukrainian refugees. Following the outbreak of war\, Madeleine and Elena began volunteering at a major refugee center in Warsaw where they assisted in the development of the refugee center’s “Medical Point.” Through many months of working in the “Medical Point\,” they have come to better understand the vast medical and resource needs of refugees. They gained additional experience as community volunteers for other medical\, educational\, and humanitarian services\, with a focus on children displaced by war. \nElena Camacho Byrd \nElena Camacho Byrd\, born in Lausanne\, Switzerland\, grew up in Cuba before she and her family fled during the Cuban Revolution to move to the United States. Elena received a BA in English and Sociology\, as well as a Master of Science in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. She studied Land Economy at the University of Cambridge. She received an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Elena spent over fifteen years working in public health writing grant proposals and assisting physicians in patient care\, primarily in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.  In the United States\, she has served as a teacher and tutor for students of all ages. She is now an active volunteer in the Nashville community\, where she is a long-term Board member of the Tennessee Poison Center. Elena is fluent in English and Spanish. She is married to Barney Byrd\, and has three grown children. \nDr. Madeleine Byrd\, M.S.\, M.D. \nMadeleine Elizabeth Byrd\, M.S.\, M.D. was born and raised in Nashville\, Tennessee\, where she attended The Harpeth Hall School. Madeleine received her B.A. in neuroscience from The University of Pennsylvania. She completed her Master’s in Pharmacology and M.D. at Georgetown University. Madeleine has strong family ties to medicine on both sides of her family\, and is a fourth generation “Dr. Byrd” in Nashville. Among the first questions asked were who did it\, why did they do it\, and was it terrorism. That last question has become a quintessential element of mass violence in America. We may feel some relief when when a heinous act is not called terrorism\, sadly\, not that its horrific nature is lessened by its label but the implication that it’s not part of a wider campaign. \nMost bombings have been judged to be terrorism in that they have a political or ideological motivation. The Nashville bombing has yet to be labeled by law enforcement as such\, not that the average citizen couldn’t be forgiven for concluding  the Christmas bombing was “terror” in their minds. [The distinction of an act of “terrorism” is not lost on the home owners and business people who may lose insurance coverage if December 25th was officially designated an act of terror.] \nAs the FBI continues the investigation into the Christmas bombing and we navigate the aftermath we will try to put it in the context of the threat of such violence from domestic and international sources. To do so TNWAC has invited Malcolm Nance\, an expert in analyzing and countering terrorist violence. Nance literally wrote the book on it. A prolific author he produced the “Terrorist Recognition Handbook: A Practitioner’s  Manual for Predicting and Identifying Terrorist Activities.” He has also written extensively on combatting the Islamic State and on Russian hacking attacks on American cyber systems in furtherance of political and national security objectives. Nance’s counter-terrorism activities include work in the field to combat terrorist activities. \nNance retired from the Navy after 20 years and promotion to Senior Chief Petty Officer. Among his post-military pursuits was work in preparing Navy special operations forces\, SEALs and others\, in methods to endure captivity at the hands of a new class of enemies like Al Qaeda militants. He also worked in security and intelligence activities in Iraq after the 2003 U.S. invasion. Along the way he became an expert on extremist threats in Iraq and literally wrote the book on ISIS producing a handbook that became a counter-terrorism bible. Nance’s research and writing about ISIS’ use of electronic media led to his dive into what was to emerge as a wide-ranging Russian information warfare capability and campaign. \nHosting the conversation with Malcolm Nance will be TNWAC’s founding president and retired Navy Intelligence Officer\, LCDR Patrick Ryan. Among his experiences working in Middle East affairs was assignment as chief of terrorism analysis at U.S. Central Command during the bombings of USMTM in Riyadh and the USAF barracks in al-Khobar. [Source] \nPatrick Ryan is a native of New York City. He enlisted in the Navy at age 17 and volunteered for submarine duty. He served aboard nuclear fast attack and ballistic missile boats during the Cold War\, rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. In 1982 he was commissioned and served aboard a cruiser in the Western Pacific before becoming a Navy Intelligence Officer. Ryan served aboard the carrier Constellation in the Pacific\, the Joint Staff Intelligence Directorate in the Pentagon\, the Center for Naval Analysis\, and the Intelligence Directorate of U.S. Central Command. At CENTCOM Ryan was Chief of the Terrorism Assessments Branch responsible for intelligence reporting on threats across the Horn of Africa\, Arabian Peninsula and Southwest Asia. In 1997 he was selected in the Intelligence Community’s Exceptional Intelligence Analyst Program to research the emerging threat from Al Qaeda. He retired from the Navy in 1998 and worked as a consultant on Intelligence Community projects and as the VP/COO of the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations. Ryan ran a newsletter publishing business on international affairs from 1999-2016.
