SUMMARY:THE WORLD AHEAD 2025: TOP 10 TRENDS TO WATCH (webinar)
DESCRIPTION:“THE WORLD AHEAD 2025: TOP 10 TRENDS TO WATCH”\n \n\n  \nMonday\, December 9\, 2024 I 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm \nAfter an unprecedented year of elections\, new leaders around the globe who have promised change will be expected to deliver in 2025. SUMMARY:Webinar | China's Use of Armed Coercion to Win Without Fighting
DESCRIPTION:China’s Use of Armed Coercion to Win Without Fighting\n\n\n\nWednesday\, September 11th | 12:00pm – 1:00pm \n\nOver the past 20 years\, China’s international status as a “great power” has become undeniable. China’s “peaceful rise” has included substantial investments in military modernization and an increasingly assertive regional posture. While China has not waged war\, it has frequently resorted to what the US State Department has referred to as “gangster tactics” – threats\, intimidation\, and armed confrontation – to advance its strategic aims. China’s regional ambitions are evident from how it has asserted itself militarily\, especially within the maritime “nine-dash line” and concerning several ongoing territorial disputes with its neighbors. China’s efforts to project power are intended to intimidate its smaller neighbors and to push back against US military presence and freedom of action in the region. \nRegister Now\n  \nSpeaker:\n \n\n\nJames A. Siebens is a Fellow with Stimson Center’s Reimagining U.S. Grand Strategy program\, where he leads the Defense Strategy and Planning project. He is the editor of China’s Use of Armed Coercion: To Win Without Fighting (Routledge 2023)\, a study on China’s use of military and paramilitary forces for purposes of coercion. He is also co-editor of Military Coercion and U.S. Foreign Policy: The Use of Force Short of War (Routledge 2020)\, a book on U.S. strategy and military operations since the end of the Cold War. Siebens is also affiliated with Stimson’s Cyber program and Russia program. His research focuses on grand strategy\, military coercion\, and gray zone conflict. \nSiebens previously served as a Research Associate and Special Assistant to the President and CEO at the Stimson Center. Prior to joining Stimson\, he was a Data Analyst at the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) at the University of Maryland\, where he contributed to a DoD-sponsored study on gray zone conflict. Siebens is a Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations and holds an M.A. in International Affairs with a concentration in Global Security from American University’s School of International Service. \nModerator:\n \nJeremy Goldkorn is an editor and writer whose work has focused on China. He co-founded the Sinica Podcast in 2010 and was editor-in-chief of The China Project from 2016 to 2023. Goldkorn moved from his hometown of Johannesburg\, South Africa\, to China in 1995 and became managing editor of Beijing’s first independent English-language entertainment magazine. He later edited and founded several other publications\, including the website Danwei\, which tracked Chinese media\, markets\, politics\, and business\, acquired in 2013 by the Financial Times. \nWhile in China\, he lived in a worker’s dormitory\, produced a documentary film about African soccer players in Beijing\, and rode a bicycle from Peshawar to Kathmandu via Kashgar and Lhasa. He moved to Nashville\, Tennessee\, in 2015. He is a graduate of the University of Cape Town. \n \n\n \nOUR MISSION: \nAs a nonpartisan nonprofit organization\, we aim to promote international awareness\, understanding\, and connections to enhance the region’s global stature and prepare Tennesseans to thrive in our increasingly complex and connected world. \nOUR VISION: \nTo create a well-informed community that thinks critically about the world and the impact of global events. \n\n\n  \nRegister Now\nInternational Career Panel | April 3\, 2024\n \n\n\n\n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Webinar | The Lithuanian Perspective on Russian Aggression in Ukraine | June 19\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Tennessee World Affairs Council\nis proud to present\n\n\nThe Lithuanian Perspective on Russian Aggression in Ukraine\n\n\n\nvia Zoom\n \n\nWednesday\, June 19\, 2024\n12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m. CT\nLithuania’s political past and borders have been anything but stable since the 13th century when the semblance of a cohesive state began. Now\, with Russia’s war in Ukraine\, which is less than 800 miles southeast of Lithuania\, it seems that instability in Central Europe is rearing its head again and could threaten Lithuania and other nations in the Baltic region. In 1940 after a short 22 years of independence\, Lithuania was invaded by the Soviet Union which absorbed this small\, proud country the size of West Virginia. It remained occupied by Soviet forces until 1991 when the Soviet Union finally recognized Lithuania’s independence. Though facing plenty of political turmoil after its past occupations by both Nazi and Soviet forces\, Lithuania’s reconstruction and independence seemed more certain to a now westward-leaning state in the early 2000s. Lithuania joined the UN\, NATO\, and the EU. But\, in 2014\, Russia\, now led by Vladimir Putin\, invaded the Crimean Peninsula\, and on February 24\, 2022\, began its invasion of Ukraine. What do Lithuanians think about their past and the recent years of independence from Russian control and influence? What do they think now about the war in Ukraine and their own future as an independent nation with a neighbor like Russia? Why does history have a way of repeating itself in this region of the world?\n \n\n\nRegister Now \n  \n\nLinas Zabaliunas\n\nMy name is Linas Zabaliunas born in 1979 in Lithuania\, I graduated my primary school still under the Soviet occupation. At the age of 10\, my school year were the first generation in school to refuse to join the Soviet Pioneer organization\, as the Lithuanian Freedom movement was catching speed.\nIn 1993\, with my family\, I lived in England for 9 months. My dad was a University teacher in Lithuania and was taking a qualification course at the University of Plymouth. During this time\, we lived in Devon\, we saw all the busy B&Bs and got the idea of developing one in Lithuania. Individual\, private hospitality existed only on the Lithuanian coast at that time.\nSo\, upon return to Lithuania\, we bought a half-built house in the suburbs of Kaunas (second largest city in Lithuania) and we set about converting it into a guesthouse with 9 double ensuite rooms for the guests. Our neighbors could not understand why the Zabaliunas family are building a house with 14 toilets\, and they were visiting the building site as the attraction!\nWhile building work continued\, we opened a grocery shop in the ground floor of the building\, for the community to shop. I was responsible for the deliveries\, going to cash and carry\, before my lectures at university started. These were big steps for us\, as we left Soviet life behind and opened up to private business.\nWe welcomed our first guests (mostly family friends from UK) in 1999. My favorite year was 2004 when my parents retired from the university and went to the USA visiting friends and relatives. Me and Jurga (girlfriend then\, wife now!) were running the whole show at Nemunas Tour Guest House and after the successful marketing campaign in Finnish newspaper we had an invasion of Finnish guests that year!\nOur guesthouse joined the Lithuanian Countryside Tourism Association the same year. Off season\, I started spending more time at Lithuanian Countryside Tourism Association. In 2005 was elected the head of Kaunas region\, in 2007 elected as member of the Board of the Association\, in 2009 was elected as the Chairman of the Board and in 2011 started in the position of President of Lithuanian Countryside Tourism Association – uniting over 300 members and having around 10\,000 beds. Together with 9 other tourism associations in 2014 we have established The Chamber of Tourism of the Republic of Lithuania and we have rotated the Presidency every 2 years.\nDuring all this time I was already working for Lithuanian Holidays (a UK based specialist tour operator) and they were expanding to become Baltic Holidays (www.balticholidays.com) to cover the 3 Baltic States. I hosted British and international guests and guided them in Lithuania during their tour. Jurga and I also got married and had daughters Ema and Kamile. And\, seeing a niche in the domestic and international market for good quality camping facilities\, Jurga and I opened our first campsite in 2012 in Kaunas (www.campinn.lt).\nIn 2014\, Jurga and I\, along with our business partner Sally Chambers\, bought out our old friend Baltic Holidays. Sally had been at Baltic Holidays from the very early days and managed its growth to become the leading specialist tour operator for tailor-made private tours to the Baltic States and surrounding countries. Sally is British and based in the Lake District\, UK\, but previously lived in Lithuania and has immense knowledge and experience of the Baltic tourism industry after more than 20 years expert involvement. Linas\, Jurga\, Sally & our small sales team are highly regarded in the regions tourism industry.\nFor me\, in 2020 I have resigned from the role of President of the Countryside Tourism Association but remain as Chairman of the Board. 2020 also saw us open our second campsite in the pretty spa town of Birštonas in Lithuania (www.naturcamp.lt). Of course\, Baltic Holidays and the Campsite has been quiet during the pandemic and have ready for action when our guests return in post Covid life! But….\nAs our old wisdom says – no one can choose his neighbors and 2022 02 24 has proven it well.\nDuring my activities in tourism have been involved in many initiatives and one of them has a really strong connection with Nashville\, TN. Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville and LSMU gymnasium in Kaunas\, Lithuania has come a long\, nice way since the first visit of MBA teachers to from Lithuania following in the footsteps of world renown writer from Nashville – Rūta Sepetys. Have been involved in bridging this partnership sine the first day with a great help of good friend Emmett Russell and Rūta Sepetys as well as active communities of teachers and students in both schools.\nIt will be a great pleasure for me to visit Nashville next week and have a great reunion with since the pre covid days!\n \n  \nEmmett Russell\n\nA native Nashvillian\, Emmett Russell attended Montgomery Bell Academy for high school. He graduated from Rhodes College with BA in English in 1992 and from Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf School of English with an MA in Literature in 2004. At Rhodes he fell in love with literature\, history\, and travel while attending the British and European Studies summer programs in Oxford\, England. Putin’s Mercenaries” and David Kaiser\, medical services volunteer supporting Ukraine’s wounded military and civilians. \n\n\n\nAbout Ewa Galicia \n\nEwa Galica is a graduate of the University of Warsaw. She began her journalism career in 2007 at the American television station NBC News in London. She has been associated with TVN and TVN24 for 13 years. She is the author of documentaries distinguished with awards at the World Media Festival in Hamburg: Uwolnić kapitana (Free the Captain) about the case of Captain Andrzej Lasota\, who was held in a Mexican prison for almost two years\, and Sąd biskupi i sekret papieski (The Bishop’s Court and the Pope’s Secret) in which Mariusz Milewski\, molested as a child by a priest\, reveals the secrets behind how the Church justice system operates. \nAbout “The Wagner Group: Putin’s Mercenaries” \nTrailer | Warning: Contains violent scenes \nDirector’s Statement \nThe film reveals the true face of the head of the Wagner Group\, Yevgeny Prigozhin\, who himself admits that his mercenaries “will win over Ukraine\, and later over NATO and the whole world”\, leaving no doubt how dangerous this organization is not only for Ukraine but also for all of us. \nAll the interlocutors of the director\, Ewa Galica\, pursue their goal with great determination: to reveal the details of the functioning of the Wagner Group\, which\, in their opinion\, threatens Western democracies. In the beginning\, the Wagner Group was a closely guarded secret\, Putin’s secret project\, today it is an officially registered company and is becoming more and more dangerous by the day. Former mercenaries appearing in the film: Alexander and Marat\, and the Russian dissident Vladimir\, risk their lives to tell about the crimes of the Wagnerians and the details of recruiting new mercenaries. They hope that by releasing this information\, the Wagner Group will be recognized as a terrorist organization worldwide. The film was made thanks to their courage. \nSynopsis \nThe illegal in Russia private military company “Wagner Group” rose in popularity during the war in Ukraine. In The Wagner Group. Putin’s Mercenaries documentary Ewa Galica talks to former Wagner Group mercenaries who fled to the West\, disagreeing with the group’s methods of operation. The film also features a Russian dissident who risks his life by revealing information concerning executions within the group\, crimes committed by its members\, and their contracts. The work contains previously unpublished footage of the Wagner Group members\, shot during the fighting on the Ukrainian front. \n“The Wagner Group. Putin’s Mercenaries” sheds light on the activities of the Wagner Group\, a private mercenary army created by Yevgeny Prigozhin\, nicknamed “Putin’s cook.” Initially\, the group guarded the interests of the Kremlin wherever Russia could not send a regular army. It operated in Africa and the Middle East\, where it was famous for its brutality and ruthlessness. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the first defeats of Putin’s army\, they were engaged in operations at the front. The film features the Wagnerians\, former mercenaries of the Wagner Group\, who fled to the West\, refusing to agree to its methods of operation. The document also features a Russian dissident who risks his life by revealing information about internal executions\, new mercenaries and their contracts. The film is illustrated with previously unpublished recordings of Wagnerians made during the fighting on the Ukrainian front and the recruitment process of Wagnerians in Russian prisons documented with hidden cameras. \nAbout David Kaiser \nDavid Kaiser is a medical specialist and volunteer who helps facilitate treatment for Ukrainian military and civilian casualties in Poland and in Ukraine\, especially amputees\, through an array of organizations supporting the humanitarian needs of victims of the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine. \nKaiser is a former Captain Infantry\, United States Army\, 1968-1971\, served as Combat military advisor to the Vietnamese\, psychological operations\, and instructor in tactics and jungle warfare. Team leader- Mobile Advisory Team I-19\, 1969-1970\, Que Son\, Viet Nam. He brings comprehensive “know how” in the development and operations of new medical initiatives. Mr. Kaiser has developed and operated integrated health care delivery systems including for Health Maintenance Organisations (HMO)\, Consolidated Medical Group Practices\, Hospitals\, and Medical Marketing in the USA\, Central and Eastern Europe. Medical delivery\, physician governance and reimbursement mechanisms continue to evolve into comprehensive and complicated systems. Mr. Kaiser has been influential in implementing many comprehensive delivery initiatives into the infrastructure where health delivery is a major concern. \nBackground \nWith the beginning of the war in Ukraine\, including the armed military response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine\, global leaders have partnered to support a significant increase in wartime injuries and casualties. Individuals with polytrauma and major limb amputation constitute one of the most severe injuries. \nReports from the Ministry of Health\, Ukraine confirms that 500+ soldiers\, civilians\, and children with limb amputations need prosthetic\, orthotic\, and mental health care. An immediate need has been identified for the development of programs to support these individuals with complex polytrauma. This includes individuals with two or more “trauma” diagnoses\, including but not limited to major limb amputation\, traumatic brain injury\, spinal cord injury\, and emotional\, physiological\, and psychological trauma. \nWhile many military casualties and trauma instances are known\, we know many civilian adults and children who have also experienced severe trauma\, including loss of a limb\, other life-altering injuries\, and psychological trauma. \nOpportunity \nEncouraged the Ministry of Health\, Ukraine (which is responsible for wartime rehabilitation)\, The Ukrainian National Guard\, Baylor College of Medicine\, the Polish government healthcare system\, and ‘Alliance for Innovation (AFI)\, a US/Polish entity focused on healthcare delivery and trauma treatment\, have established a rehabilitation center of excellence in Poland to manage short and long-term patient care. \nBaylor’s team includes experts from Center for Prosthetic & Orthotic Care and Clinical Innovation\, the H. It will provide prosthetic\, orthotic\, psychological\, physical medicine\, orthopedics\, musculoskeletal\, and polytrauma rehab in line with these specialties and targeted therapies for rehabilitation and restoration. \n• Other hospitals and rehabilitation facilities in addition to the one in Warsaw have offered their services. \nOther Involvement and Support: \nAugust Mission provided logistical support\, and Operation Walk Chicago offered to provide wheelchairs for the patients. Also\, the Virginia Commonwealth University and Denver\, Colorado’s Craig Hospital for Traumatic Brain Injury/Neurological Disorder\, and others may send volunteers\, while the University of Massachusetts’ Spalding Rehabilitation Center may provide a telemedicine solution to the project. \nThe first patients arrived in Warsaw in mid-November 2022 and were immediately housed in a hotel annex on the hospital campus. \nThe first two soldiers lost their left arms during combat operations in March and April\, 2022 in Mariupol. After amputation\, one was also a prisoner of war for 1 an ½ months until the first prisoner swap. \nThey were identified by the National Guard of Ukraine\, necessary papers processed including the signature of Informed consent previously developed by our legal team in English\, Polish\, and Ukrainian; this to agree to transportation cross-border\, sharing of medical records\, and treatment protocols. \nOnce settled in the hotel\, Ottobock was with them the following day to meet and explain the prosthesis process\, demonstrate expectations\, take measurements\, and arrange for follow up meeting for fittings and training. \nThe following day\, Alliance of Innovation met to provide psychological evaluation and assessment for future needs. \nA patient advocate to interface for communication\, other needs such as washing clothes\, access to television in Ukrainian and hair cut would interface for other amenities. \nThese soldiers were properly fitted\, trained\, informed of procedures for follow-up\, and the onsite team returned them to their homes and families just before Christmas. \n\n\n\nTHANKS TO OUR PARTNERS IN GLOBAL AFFAIRS AWARENESS AND EDUCATION OUTREACH \n \nTHANKS TO OUR PARTNERS IN GLOBAL AFFAIRS AWARENESS \n \nTHANKS TO DISTINGUISHED VISITING SPEAKER SERIES PARTNERS \n \nTHANKS TO TNWAC CORPORATE MEMBERS FOR SUPPORT TO EDUCATION OUTREACH PROGRAMS \n \nTHANKS TO OUR SUPPORTERS IN GLOBAL AFFAIRS AWARENESS AND EDUCATION OUTREACH \n \n \nTHANKS TO OUR PARTNERS IN GLOBAL AFFAIRS AWARENESS AND EDUCATION OUTREACH \n \nA PROUD MEMBER OF THE WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCILS OF AMERICA SINCE 2007 AND CO-WINNER OF THE COUNCIL OF THE YEAR (2022) \n \nTennessee World Affairs Council Profile | Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee \nMember\, Center for Nonprofit Management \nTHE MISSION of the nonprofit\, nonpartisan Tennessee World Affairs Council is to promote international awareness\, understanding and connections to enhance the region’s global stature and to prepare Tennesseans to thrive in our increasingly complex and connected world. \nTHE VISION of  the Tennessee World Affairs Council is a well-informed community that thinks critically about the world and the impact of global events.

The leaders discussed their mutual interests in the context of the world of 1945\, but the longstanding conventional thinking about the relationship was not the basis for building ties. So says Professor David Des Roches\, Army combat veteran\, who served numerous tours in the Middle East and now specializes in the Arabian Peninsula at the Defense Department’s Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies. He notes there’s a shortfall in the knowledge of the history of America’s security interests with the Kingdom. \nThe lack of detail in that knowledge is a point also made by Commodore Abdulateef al Mulhim who served a career in the Royal Saudi Navy and who is a consultant and commentator on global affairs\, especially the U.S.-Saudi relationship. The deep ties and shared interests\, he says\, are little understood as he points to the successful partnership in the Cold War\, in tackling regional security challenges and in serving as a reliable provider of global energy resources. Mulhim\, who received his undergraduate education at the State University of New York Maritime College\, notes that the liberation of Kuwait and other American military operations in the region would not have been possible with the close partnership. \nThe U.S.-Saudi ties span many dimensions: political\, military\, economic\, cultural\, academic and more. However\, the conversation in the U.S. about America’s relationship with Saudi Arabia is generally focused on leadership issues. Former American Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Chas Freeman likened it to a marriage that had its ups and downs but had staying power based on the mutual benefit. The national security partnership\, said Des Roches\, was very good\, adding\, until Jamal Khashoggi. The brutal murder of the journalist put the conduct of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the spotlight amid accusations he ordered the crime. The White House has worked to move forward but a number of issues remain. Meanwhile\, the strategic importance of the relationship\, the “tough neighborhood” American military forces continue to engage in\, and the interest in the stability and safe availability of Arabian Peninsula energy supplies make it important to understand that piece of U.S.-Saudi ties. \nJoin TNWAC in a Global Dialogue Zoom Webinar featuring Commodore Abdulateef al Mulhim and Professor David Des Roches with moderator\, Patrick Ryan\, TNWAC President on July 19 at 12:00 pm Central Time\, 1:00 pm Eastern Time and 8:00 pm Saudi Arabia Standard Time to discuss the historical context and more. \nWe’ll explore these questions and more\, and your questions too: \n\nWhat is the current state of the mil-to-mil partnership?\nWhat is the significance of GCC partners signing the Abraham Accord with Israel?\nWhat is the impact of Riyad’s improved relations with Russia and China?\nWhat is the impact of Riyad’s improved relations with Iran?\nHow has the Saudi-led alliance’s war in Yemen affected U.S. ties?\nHow can the U.S. and Saudi Arabia improve mutual security interests in the Gulf?\n\nAbout Abdulateef al Mulhim \nAbdulateef Al Mulhim is Vice President at Saudi Consulting Services-Saudi Consult. Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman\n  \nMarch 8\, 2023 @ 12:00 p.m. CT\nWith Moderator \n\nLCDR Patrick Ryan\, USN (Ret)\nFounding President\, TNWAC \nRegister Now\n\nThe story of the Iraqi Kurds and the establishment of the autonomous zone and the Kurdish Regional Government is a great Middle East epic that continues to play out. The Kurds have sought to carve out their own state amid the turmoil of unfolding regional history. They’ve been gassed and chased into the mountains by Saddam Hussein and attacked by the dangerous terror group ISIS. The Kurds have stood up courageously against their opponents. \nThe Iraqi Kurds and the United States have had a long history of cooperation and sadly\, at times\, abandonment. The aspirations of the people of Kurdistan took shape in the 2017 independence referendum as the coalition battle against ISIS was winding down. The referendum won with 92% of Kurds voting to free the region from Baghdad’s authority. However\, the central government through a Supreme Court ruling\, quashed the initiative. The KRG continues its close relationship with Washington as it continues to navigate a tough neighborhood\, wedged among its Iraqi neighbors and Turkey\, Iran and Syria. The KRG has been very well represented in Washington by the Hon. Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman. TNWAC is pleased to host her for a conversation about the relationship with the U.S. and developments in Kurdistan and the region. Join us. \n\nBayan Sami Abdul Rahman \nKurdistan Regional Government Representative to the United States \nBayan Sami Abdul Rahman is the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Representative to the United States of America. \nKey to her role are strengthening ties between Kurdistan and the United States\, advocating her government’s position on a wide array of political\, security\, humanitarian\, economic\, and cultural matters and promoting coordination and partnership. She worked for the FT in Britain and in Japan\, where she was Tokyo Correspondent. \nHer late father\, Sami Abdul Rahman\, was a veteran of the Kurdish freedom movement\, joining the Kurdistan Democratic Party in 1963 and playing a critical leadership role in the Kurdish and Iraqi opposition to Saddam Hussein’s regime. He held the post of Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government and General Secretary of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP). Sami Abdul Rahman was killed alongside his elder son Salah and 96 others in a twin suicide bombing in 2004. \nMs. Abdul Rahman was born in Baghdad. Her family briefly lived in Iran in the mid-1970s before moving to Britain in 1976. She is a history graduate from London University. \nPatrick W. SUMMARY:Global Dialogue | Malcolm Nance | Terrorism: At Home and Abroad
DESCRIPTION:Global Dialogue Webinar Series\nTerrorism: At Home and Abroad\nwith\nMalcolm Nance\nAuthor and Director of the Terror Asymmetrics Project\n\n \n\nand host\nPatrick Ryan\nFormer Chief of Terrorism Assessments\, US Central Command\n \nJanuary 5\, 2021\n\n6:00 PM CT\nREGISTER BELOW \nAt 6:28 a.m. a massive explosion ripped through a historic block of North Second Avenue in downtown Nashville. Among the first questions asked were who did it\, why did they do it\, and was it terrorism. That last question has become a quintessential element of mass violence in America. We may feel some relief when when a heinous act is not called terrorism\, sadly\, not that its horrific nature is lessened by its label but the implication that it’s not part of a wider campaign. \nMost bombings have been judged to be terrorism in that they have a political or ideological motivation. The Nashville bombing has yet to be labeled by law enforcement as such\, not that the average citizen couldn’t be forgiven for concluding  the Christmas bombing was “terror” in their minds. [The distinction of an act of “terrorism” is not lost on the home owners and business people who may lose insurance coverage if December 25th was officially designated an act of terror.] \nAs the FBI continues the investigation into the Christmas bombing and we navigate the aftermath we will try to put it in the context of the threat of such violence from domestic and international sources. To do so TNWAC has invited Malcolm Nance\, an expert in analyzing and countering terrorist violence. Nance literally wrote the book on it. A prolific author he produced the “Terrorist Recognition Handbook: A Practitioner’s  Manual for Predicting and Identifying Terrorist Activities.” He has also written extensively on combatting the Islamic State and on Russian hacking attacks on American cyber systems in furtherance of political and national security objectives. Nance’s counter-terrorism activities include work in the field to combat terrorist activities. \nNance retired from the Navy after 20 years and promotion to Senior Chief Petty Officer. Among his post-military pursuits was work in preparing Navy special operations forces\, SEALs and others\, in methods to endure captivity at the hands of a new class of enemies like Al Qaeda militants. He also worked in security and intelligence activities in Iraq after the 2003 U.S. invasion. Along the way he became an expert on extremist threats in Iraq and literally wrote the book on ISIS producing a handbook that became a counter-terrorism bible. Nance’s research and writing about ISIS’ use of electronic media led to his dive into what was to emerge as a wide-ranging Russian information warfare capability and campaign. \nHosting the conversation with Malcolm Nance will be TNWAC’s founding president and retired Navy Intelligence Officer\, LCDR Patrick Ryan. Among his experiences working in Middle East affairs was assignment as chief of terrorism analysis at U.S. Central Command during the bombings of USMTM in Riyadh and the USAF barracks in al-Khobar. He completed his 26 years in the Navy in 1998\, on a one-year\, Intelligence Community research project into the emergence of the Al Qaeda threat. \nJoin us on Tuesday\, January 5th at 6:00 pm\, as Nance and Ryan discuss the Nashville bombing\, the domestic terror threat — called the “greatest threat to the homeland” by FBI Director Wray — and the ever present international terror that to U.S. interests. \nYou should also listen to the TNWAC “Global Tennessee” Podcast recorded a year ago when Nance visited Nashville. You can find it HERE on our SoundCloud.com/tnwac Podcast archive of “Global Tennessee” Pods. \n\nMalcolm Nance is a former Arabic speaking naval intelligence counter-terrorism and intelligence officer specializing in the Middle East; a combat veteran\, Survival\, Evasion\, Resistance and Escape expert\, historian\, and author. He spent 35 years participating in field and combat intelligence activity including both covert and clandestine anti & counter-terrorism support to national intelligence agencies.
