From 2001 to 2009\, he was chairman of Lazard Freres Germany. He currently serves as senior counsellor to the international law firm Noerr LLP and as a senior adviser to the worldwide consultancy Accenture. Mr. Kornblum has also served on a number of supervisory and advisory boards including those of Thyssen-Krupp\, Technologies AG\, Bayer AG\, Russell Reynolds\, and Motorola Europe. He is a member of the boards of the American Chamber of Commerce in Germany\, the American Academy in Berlin\, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin\, and of numerous nonprofit organizations on both sides of the Atlantic. TNWAC will contact all schools that pledge teams about participation in the Practice Match. \n \n  \n\nADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT ACADEMIC WORLDQUEST\nThe Tennessee World Affairs Council (TNWAC) Anne Smedinghoff Academic WorldQuest (AWQ) is the flagship youth education program of the Tennessee World Affairs Council and the national network of World Affairs Councils of America (WACA). High school students from across Tennessee are invited to play. TNWAC has also welcomed teams from other states who do not have a nearby AWQ program available. \nThe TNWAC AWQ program is named in honor of Anne Smedinghoff\, a United States Foreign Service Officer posted at the U.S. Embassy\, Kabul Afghanistan. She was killed in the line of duty in 2013 by a car bomb while an American team was delivering books to an Afghan school. Learn more about Anne Smedinghoff HERE. \n \nWorldQuest is a team game testing high school students’ knowledge of international affairs. In the game\, four-person teams compete by answering multiple-choice questions divided into ten engaging thematic categories (below). Academic WorldQuest is unique to the World Affairs Council system. \nThe Tennessee World Affairs Council organizes a TNWAC Championship Match and a practice match each AWQ season. The competitions are held in person at Belmont University. If public health considerations do not permit in-person competition\, other arrangements will be made. However\, as of December 28\, 2021 TNWAC plans to hold the championship match in person\, with appropriate safety measure in place. \nTNWAC will follow the Covid-19 measures in place for the National Championship Match in Washington\, DC. This includes proof of Covid-19 vaccinations and use of masks by all participants. Details here. \n \nThe top-ranked Tennessee WAC finisher in the competition will be designated the TNWAC champions and will represent TNWAC at the National Championship match in Washington\, D.C.\, April 29-30\, 2022 at the United States Institute of Peace. \nThe Tennessee World Affairs Council will provide an escort for the team visit to Washington and will schedule visits to international affairs institutions and organizations. In the past these have included foreign embassies\, think tanks\, NGOs and Capitol Hill visits with Congressional representatives. \n\nWorldQuest is a flagship program of the World Affairs Council’s education outreach efforts and is integrated with other elements such as the “What in the World?” Weekly Quiz — which sharpens students’ knowledge of current global events and the “Global Scholars Diploma” program. \nPlans for 2021-2022 \nDates \n\nPLEASE PLEDGE a school/team NOW. TNWAC will contact all schools that pledge teams about participation in the Practice Match. \n \n  \n\nADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT ACADEMIC WORLDQUEST\nThe Tennessee World Affairs Council (TNWAC) Anne Smedinghoff Academic WorldQuest (AWQ) is the flagship youth education program of the Tennessee World Affairs Council and the national network of World Affairs Councils of America (WACA). High school students from across Tennessee are invited to play. TNWAC has also welcomed teams from other states who do not have a nearby AWQ program available. \nThe TNWAC AWQ program is named in honor of Anne Smedinghoff\, a United States Foreign Service Officer posted at the U.S. Embassy\, Kabul Afghanistan. She was killed in the line of duty in 2013 by a car bomb while an American team was delivering books to an Afghan school. Learn more about Anne Smedinghoff HERE. \n \nWorldQuest is a team game testing high school students’ knowledge of international affairs. In the game\, four-person teams compete by answering multiple-choice questions divided into ten engaging thematic categories (below). Academic WorldQuest is unique to the World Affairs Council system. \nThe Tennessee World Affairs Council organizes a TNWAC Championship Match and a practice match each AWQ season. The competitions are held in person at Belmont University. If public health considerations do not permit in-person competition\, other arrangements will be made. However\, as of December 28\, 2021 TNWAC plans to hold the championship match in person\, with appropriate safety measure in place. \nTNWAC will follow the Covid-19 measures in place for the National Championship Match in Washington\, DC. He currently serves as senior counsellor to the international law firm Noerr LLP and as a senior adviser to the worldwide consultancy Accenture. Mr. Kornblum has also served on a number of supervisory and advisory boards including those of Thyssen-Krupp\, Technologies AG\, Bayer AG\, Russell Reynolds\, and Motorola Europe. He is a member of the boards of the American Chamber of Commerce in Germany\, the American Academy in Berlin\, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin\, and of numerous nonprofit organizations on both sides of the Atlantic. He received a B.A. from Michigan State University in 1964\, and he has been the recipient of many awards\, including a Knights Cross of the Order of Merit from Germany and an Order of Merit from Austria. \nDr. Breck Walker \nBreck Walker received his PhD in Diplomatic History from Vanderbilt in 2007. His dissertation was on the foreign policy of the Carter administration. He taught at Sewanee\, the University of the South\, 2007-2012\, and on the University of Virginia’s Semester at Sea Program in Spring 2013 and Fall 2015. He worked as a historian in the Historical Office of the Office of Secretary of Defense 2013-2016\, researching and writing a book on early Pentagon cyber policy. Prior to becoming a history professor\, Breck worked for twenty years as an investment banker\, the last ten as co-head of the Corporate Finance Group at J.C. Bradford & Co in Nashville. He has an undergraduate degree from the University of Texas\, and J.D. and M.B.A. degrees from Stanford University. HERE \n\nAmbassador John C. Kornblum has a long record of service in the United States and Europe both as a diplomat and as a businessman. His dissertation was on the foreign policy of the Carter administration. He taught at Sewanee\, the University of the South\, 2007-2012\, and on the University of Virginia’s Semester at Sea Program in Spring 2013 and Fall 2015. He worked as a historian in the Historical Office of the Office of Secretary of Defense 2013-2016\, researching and writing a book on early Pentagon cyber policy. Prior to becoming a history professor\, Breck worked for twenty years as an investment banker\, the last ten as co-head of the Corporate Finance Group at J.C. Bradford & Co in Nashville. He has an undergraduate degree from the University of Texas\, and J.D. and M.B.A. degrees from Stanford University. Kornblum has a long record of service in the United States and Europe both as a diplomat and as a businessman. Before that\, he occupied a number of high-level diplomatic posts\, including U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European affairs\, Special Envoy for the Dayton Peace Process\, U.S. Ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (Helsinki Process)\, Deputy U.S. Ambassador to NATO\, and U.S. minister and deputy commandant of forces in divided Berlin. From 2001 to 2009\, he was chairman of Lazard Freres Germany. He currently serves as senior counsellor to the international law firm Noerr LLP and as a senior adviser to the worldwide consultancy Accenture. Mr. Kornblum has also served on a number of supervisory and advisory boards including those of Thyssen-Krupp\, Technologies AG\, Bayer AG\, Russell Reynolds\, and Motorola Europe. He is a member of the boards of the American Chamber of Commerce in Germany\, the American Academy in Berlin\, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin\, and of numerous nonprofit organizations on both sides of the Atlantic. He received a B.A. from Michigan State University in 1964\, and he has been the recipient of many awards\, including a Knights Cross of the Order of Merit from Germany and an Order of Merit from Austria. \nDr. Liana Fix is a Resident Fellow at the German Marshall Fund’s Washington office\, while on sabbatical from the International Affairs Department of the Körber Foundation in Berlin. She is a political scientist and historian\, and her work focuses on Russia and Eastern Europe\, European security\, arms control\, and German foreign policy. She will be focusing on transatlantic policy toward Russia while at GMF. Dr. Fix has published widely in academia\, thinktanks\, and national and international media. She holds a doctorate degree from the Justus Liebig University Giessen and a master’s degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science.  \nSteven E. Sokol is the President of the American Council on Germany. Previously\, he served as President and CEO of the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh and prior to that he was the Vice President and Director of Programs at the American Council on Germany. Earlier in his career\, Steve served as the Deputy Director of the Aspen Institute Berlin\, was the Head of the Project Management Department at the Bonn International Center for Conversion GmbH (BICC)\, and a Program Officer in the Berlin office of the German Marshall Fund of the United States. He holds a Doctorate in Law and Policy from Northeastern University as well as an M.A. in International Relations and International Economics from the Johns Hopkins University’s Paul Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a B.A. from Wesleyan University. Schwartz \nThomas Alan Schwartz is a historian of the foreign relations of the United States\, with related interests in American politics\, the history of international relations\, Modern European history\, and biography. His most recent book is Henry Kissinger and American Power: A Political Biography (Hill and Wang\, 2020). The book has received considerable notice and acclaim. Harvard’s University’s Charles Maier has written: “Thomas Schwartz’s superbly researched political biography reveals the brilliance\, self-serving ego\, and vulnerability of America’s most remarkable diplomat in the twentieth century\, even as it provides a history of U.S. engagement in global politics as it moved beyond bipolarity.” Earlier in his career\, Schwartz was the author of America’s Germany: John J. This book received the Stuart Bernath Book Prize of the Society of American Foreign Relations\, and the Harry S. Truman Book Award\, given by the Truman Presidential Library. He is also the author of Lyndon Johnson and Europe: In the Shadow of Vietnam (Harvard\, 2003)\, which examined the Johnson Administration’s policy toward Europe and assessed the impact of the war in Vietnam on its other foreign policy objectives. He is the co-editor with Matthias Schulz of The Strained Alliance: U.S.-European Relations from Nixon to Carter\, (Cambridge University Press\, 2009). \nProfessor Schwartz has held fellowships from the Social Science Research Council\, the German Historical Society\, the Norwegian Nobel Institute\, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars\, and the Center for the Study of European Integration. He has served as President of the Society of Historians of American Foreign Relations. He served on the United States Department of State’s Historical Advisory Committee as the representative of the Organization of American Historians from 2005-2008. Professor Schwartz received The Madison Sarratt Prize for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching on April 3\, 2013 at the Spring Faculty Assembly\, Vanderbilt University. In 2008 Professor Schwartz received the Annual Alumni Education Award from the Vanderbilt Alumni Association. Schwartz is the recipient of the 2008 Book Award by Chi Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Order. Runde \nDaniel F. Runde is a senior vice president\, director of the Project on Prosperity and Development (PPD)\, and holds the William A. Schreyer Chair in Global Analysis at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)\, a leading global think tank.  \nMr. Runde also served as the acting director for the CSIS Americas Program from 2020-2022. Bush during the collapse of the USSR. \nAmbassador Burns began his Foreign Service career in the Middle East.  He worked at the American Consulate General in Jerusalem (1985-1987) where he coordinated U.S. economic assistance to Palestinians on the West Bank\, at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo\, Egypt (1983-85) and\, as an intern\, at the U.S. Embassy in Nouakchott\, Mauritania (1980). \nHe first visited China in 1988 accompanying Secretary of State George Shultz and then President George H.W. Bush in 1989.  He subsequently made visits to China with Secretaries Warren Christopher and Madeleine Albright as Spokesperson\, including during the handover of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the PRC in 1997. \nAs Under Secretary of State\, he worked with the PRC government on a diverse range of issues\, including Afghanistan\, North Korea\, United Nations sanctions against Iran and U.S. policy in the Indo-Pacific.  As a private citizen\, he also created and managed an Aspen Strategy Group policy dialogue with the PRC government’s Central Party School. \nBurns co-authored in 2020 with Ambassadors Marc Grossman and Marcie Ries a major study on the future of American diplomacy.  They called for fundamental reforms to strengthen the Foreign and Civil Service and to renew our country’s commitment to diplomacy. \nAmbassador Burns has received fifteen honorary degrees\, the Presidential Distinguished Service Award and the Secretary of State’s Distinguished Service Award.  He is the recipient of many other awards\, including from the governments of Estonia\, Latvia\, Lithuania\, and Kosovo. \nBurns is a graduate of Boston College (BA History 1978) and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (MA International Relations 1980). \nHe is a proud New Englander and passionate supporter of the Red Sox\, Celtics\, Patriots\, Bruins\, and Revolution. \nHe is married to Elizabeth Baylies.  They have three daughters and two grandchildren. \nAbout Jeremy Goldkorn \nJeremy Goldkorn is editor-in-chief of The China Project\, a daily newspaper about China that publishes a website\, email newsletters\, and the Sinica Podcast\, which Goldkorn co-founded in 2010. He moved from his hometown of Johannesburg\, South Africa to China in 1995 and became managing editor of Beijing’s first independent English-language entertainment magazine. He later edited and founded several other publications\, including the website Danwei\, which tracked Chinese media\, markets\, politics and business\, which was acquired in 2013 by the Financial Times. While in China\, he lived in a workers dormitory\, produced a documentary film about African soccer players in Beijing\, and rode a bicycle from Peshawar to Kathmandu via Kashgar and Lhasa. He moved to Nashville Tennessee in 2015. As part of this effort\, the Academy wants to broaden the public discussion of diplomacy and the need for change. \n\nAbout Ambassador Charles Ray \nCharles Ray retired from the US Foreign Service in 2012 after a 30-year career. Prior to joining the Foreign Service\, he spent 20 years in the US Army\, retiring with the rank of Major. During his army career\, he did two tours in Vietnam\, served in Military Intelligence\, Special Operations and Public Affairs\, with assignments in Germany\, Korea\, Vietnam\, and Panama\, as well as several posts in the United States. \nDuring his 30 years in the Foreign Service\, he was posted to China\, Thailand\, Sierra Leona\, Vietnam\, Cambodia and Zimbabwe. He served as deputy chief of mission in Sierra Leone\, was the first US consul general in Ho Chi Minh City\, Vietnam\, and served as ambassador to Cambodia and Zimbabwe. In 2005\, he was diplomat in residence at the University of Houston (TX)\, and from 2006 to 2009 served as deputy assistant secretary of defense for POW/Missing Personnel Affairs and director of the Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office. \nSince his retirement from public service in 2012\, he has been a fulltime freelance writer\, lecturer and consultant\, and has done research on leadership and ethics. He is the author of more than 200 books of fiction and nonfiction. His book Ethical Dilemmas and the Practice of Diplomacy addresses the gray area of conflicting values in the diplomatic service. Ray is a trustee and chair of the Africa Program of the Foreign Policy Research Institute. He is a frequent contributor to several online news sites and is an avid photographer and artist whose work has  ppeared in a number of publications. \nHe is a member of AFSA\, the Washington Institute of Foreign Affairs\, the American College of National Security Leaders\, the Association of Black American Ambassadors\, the American Academy of Diplomacy\, and a member of the board of the Cold War Museum. \nHe has a B.S. in business administration from Benedictine College\, Atchison\, KS\, an M.S. in systems management from the University of Southern California\, and an M.S. in national security strategy from the National War College\, National Defense University. In 2001\, he received the Thomas Jefferson Award from American citizens Abroad (ACA) for his work in support of American business in southern Vietnam and in 2009 he was awarded the Secretary of Defense Medal for Meritorious Civilian Service. \n\nBackground on the American Academy of Diplomacy \nNow in its 40th year\, the Academy is a private\, non-profit\, non-partisan association of over 350 elected members whose distinguished careers have served to promote\, strengthen\, and advance U.S. diplomacy across a wide range of global issues. Significant threats and instability in both Asia and Europe are poised to challenge an increasingly unstable world order. American politics are once again shifting and leaning towards an internal looking isolationist focus. The worlds crises and challenges are increasingly seen as “not our problem”. Today\, the United States and its allies are in a competition of ideas and ideals with authoritarian regimes around the world. Lawrence Nicholson | Mar 14\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout Lt.Gen. Lawrence Nicholson \n\nLieutenant General (ret.) Lawrence Nicholson served as the Commanding General of III Marine Expeditionary Force\, leading 30\,000 Marines and Sailors in the Asia-Pacific region\, from 2015 to 2018. \nGraduating from The Citadel in 1979\, Lieutenant General Nicholson served as an infantry officer in the First Marine Division\, Camp Pendleton\, California\, where he commanded and deployed to the Western Pacific\, leading multiple platoons and rifle companies. From 1990 to 1993\, Nicholson was assigned to the staff of US Naval Academy. Following a year at the US Army Command and General Staff College\, where he earned a Master’s Degree\, he was assigned to the Middle East as a United Nations Observer for UNTSOPalestine. In 1995\, he reported to Camp Lejeune\, NC\, as the Executive Officer of the Wolfpack of 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion\, and in 1998\, assumed command of the Warlords of 2nd BN 2nd MAR where they deployed as part of 26th MEU to the Balkans. \nUpon graduation from the NATO Defense College in Rome\, Italy in 2002\, he was assigned to NATO HQ in Brussels\, Belgium\, where he served as the Ground Forces Planner for the US Military Delegation to NATO. In July 2004\, he reported to the 1st Marine Division HQ at Camp Blue Diamond\, Ramadi\, Iraq\, where he served as the Division G-3. In July of 2005\, he assumed command of the 5th Marine Regiment and deployed with them to Fallujah\, Iraq from January 2006 to February 2007. From January 2009 through June 2010\, he served as the Commanding General of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade\, Task Force Leatherneck\, deploying with them for a year to southern Afghanistan. \nUpon return from this combat tour\, he was assigned as the Senior Military Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense in Washington\, D.C.\, from July 2010 to February 2012. In February of 2012\, Nicholson returned to Afghanistan for a year serving as the Operations Officer for the ISAF Joint Command in Kabul\, Afghanistan. General Nicholson then assumed the duties as Commanding General\, 1st Marine Division in 2013. Campbell\n\nDr. Kurt M. Campbell was confirmed by the Senate on February 6\, 2024\, and sworn in as the 22nd Deputy Secretary of State on February 12\, 2024. Prior to assuming this position\, Deputy Secretary Campbell served as Deputy Assistant to the President and Coordinator for Indo-Pacific Affairs on the National Security Council.\n \nHe was previously founding chairman and CEO of The Asia Group\, LLC\, a strategic advisory and capital management group. From 2009 to 2013\, Campbell served as the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. Earlier\, he was the CEO and co-founder of the Center for a New American Security and concurrently served as the director of the Aspen Strategy Group and chairman of the Editorial Board of the Washington Quarterly. Among the other positions he has held during his distinguished career\, Campbell served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Affairs\, White House Fellow at the Treasury Department\, and as Director of the Democracy Office at the National Security Council during the Clinton Administration.  \n \nCampbell was an associate professor of public policy at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and served in the U.S. Navy Reserves.
