SUMMARY:Global Nashville with Karl Dean | Tennessee and Refugees | March 2
DESCRIPTION:Global Nashville with Karl Dean\nMarch 2\, 2021\nRefugees and Tennessee\nA Conversation with Lisa Sherman Nikolas \nExecutive Director\, Tennessee Immigrant & Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC) \nand Special Guests  \nLouisa Saratora\, State Refugee Coordinator\, Tennessee Office for Refugees \nand Isaac James \n\nOn February 4th President Joe Biden signed an Executive Order reversing the decline in U.S. refugee admissions. The 15\,000 ceiling approved by President Trump for this fiscal year was the lowest number of refugees permitted since the modern program began in 1980. Biden’s order boosts the cap to 125\,000 for the fiscal year beginning October 1\, 2020. President Biden also called for talks with  Congress “about making a down payment on that commitment as soon as possible\,” suggesting action to increase the current fiscal year ceiling of 15\,000. \nWhat does this change mean for the reception of refugees in Tennessee? Join us for a conversation about these developments. \n\nWho is a refugee? According to the National Immigration Forum: “A person outside the U.S. seeking refuge. The U.S.\, based on international law\, defines “refugee” as a person outside the country of his or her nationality\, who is unable or unwilling to return to that country because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution based on his or her race\, religion\, nationality\, membership in a particular social group\, or political opinion. The legal basis for humanitarian admissions of refugees and asylum seekers to the United States began with the Refugee Act of 1980…” \n\nOUR PANEL \n\nLisa Sherman-Nikolas is a Guatemalan-American whose family made the difficult decision to leave Guatemala and relocate to Nashville in 2001\, Lisa has a deep commitment to fighting for an immigration system where all people can access safety\, opportunity\, and belonging. Victories under her leadership include defeating dozens of pieces of anti-immigrant legislation at the state legislature\, convincing Governor Lee to consent to continue to welcome refugees\, and pressuring the Davidson County Sheriff to terminate a rent-a-bed agreement with immigration and customs enforcement. Over the years\, she’s built respect and trust with partners\, lobbyists\, and elected officials across political aisles. \nPrior to joining the TIRRC team\, she worked in the international human rights field in New York\, London\, and Senegal. Lisa holds a Master’s degree in Conflict\, Security\, and Development from the Department of War Studies at King’s College London and is fluent in Spanish and English. \n\nIsaac James was born in Ifo refugee camp in Kenya\, Isaac is passionate about creating opportunities to strengthen migrants’ and refugees’ integration in their host communities. DESCRIPTION:In Association with Belmont University and the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce present\n\n \nREGISTER BELOW \nDon’t forget to check out the archive of “Global Nashville with Karl Dean” episodes on video [Here] and Podcast [Here] \nThere’s no shortage of issues impacting Nashville’s and Middle Tennessee’s well-being. On Tuesday evening\, January 19th former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean will talk with Ralph Schulz\, community leader and head of the Nashville Chamber. Join us for this review of important issues affecting you and your neighbors: the impact of the pandemic on business and the economy; the 2nd Avenue bombing aftermath and effects on the hospitality industry and the downtown; effects of new policies in the Biden Administration on immigration\, trade and more; the situation for small businesses shuttered or in hibernation as a result of COVID; and much more. \nAbout Ralph Schulz \nRalph Schulz was named president and CEO of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerceby the Chamber’s board of directors in November 2006\, following a 30-year career in nonprofit management\, marketing and fundraising. In taking the position\, he accepted a leadership role at one of Middle Tennessee’s oldest and largest business federations\, an organization dating back to its founding in 1847. \nDuring his tenure\, the Chamber has played a key role in helping the region emerge from the 2007 recession to a period of unprecedented growth with a business relocation and expansion strategy known as Partnership 2020. Additionally\, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce was the lead organization in the creation of the nationally recognized Nashville Entrepreneur Center and the passage of a public referendum supporting construction of the Music City Center convention facility. \nSince Schulz has taken on the role of president and CEO\, the Chamber has also led the movement to improve public school performance through the creation of the Academies of Nashville\, established the Moving Forward initiative to ensure the creation of a regional transportation solution through a cohesive community effort and developed into a respected publisher of data on the Nashville Metropolitan Statistical Area with the annual publication of the Vital Signs report. \nIn 2009\, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce was named “Chamber of the Year” by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE)\, recognizing the Nashville Chamber’s organizational excellence\, service to members\, development of leaders and volunteers and its impact on key community priorities. The ACCE award referenced the Nashville Chamber’s role in the creation of Nashville for All of Us\,a campaign made up of community leaders aligned to defeat a 2009 charter referendum which would have prohibited Nashville city government from conducting business in a language other than English. The Chamber was also praised for its creation of A Leading Edge\, a broad range of programs aimed at helping Chamber members navigate the turbulent waters of the recession. \n \nSPONSOR THIS PROGRAM! \nWe invite businesses\, organizations and individuals to sponsor this event. SUMMARY:Kate Burke\, Alliance Bernstein COO | Global Nashville with Karl Dean | Dec 8
DESCRIPTION:> \n\nGlobal Nashville with Karl Dean\n \n\nKarl Dean\, former Nashville Mayor talks with community leaders about the things that make \nNashville a global city.\nJoin Mayor Dean For a Conversation With \nKate Burke\nChief Operating Officer\, Alliance Bernstein\n \nTuesday\, December 8\, 2020\n7:00 p.m. CT\nRegister below \n  \nChief Operating Officer Kate Burke who oversaw the relocation of AB’s New York office to Nashville will join former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean on Tuesday\, December 8\, 2020 at 7pm CT on our “Global Nashville with Karl Dean” Webinar to talk about: the choice of Nashville for its corporate expansion\, the company’s international operations\, and its integration into the fabric of the community. You are invited to join the conversation. \nYou may have seen the AllianceBernstein (AB) sign go up on the tower rising at Fifth+Broadway. The new permanent downtown offices for AB will complete the investment of $11.4 million and creation of 200 new jobs in Nashville\, as noted by “BusinessFacilities.com.” The expansion of the global financial firm that has approximately $623 million in assets under management and offices in 25 countries is one of Tennessee’s most consequential economic development wins in recent years\, according to Governor Bill Lee. He said\, “The creation of hundreds of quality jobs will provide tremendous benefits to the entire Middle Tennessee region.” \nThe importance of the AB investment was echoed by TNECD Commissioner Bob Rolfe who said\, “It’s hard to overstate how significant AB’s commitment to Nashville is for our state. Once fully operational\, AB will have more than 1\,250 employees here in Middle Tennessee\, making it one of downtown Nashville’s largest employers. We’re incredibly honored that a company of this caliber has so quickly established deep roots in Tennessee and continues to create extremely well-paying and high-quality jobs in Nashville.” \nOn Opening Business in Nashville: \n“We focused around what was culturally important to us\, which was our diverse population in New York. We wanted to move to a city and find a community in which (our employees) would feel comfortable.” \n“We consistently kept hearing\, here in Nashville\, just how much people recognized the positives and the challenges of what the city was going through\, and there was a collective responsibility to solve it and that… was very appealing\, because not only did that align well with our corporate values\, but it also let us see that we can come here and be a good corporate citizen as well.” \nKate Burke\,  Vanderbilt Distinguished Speaker Series\, October 16\, 2019 \n“As AB continues to plant roots in Nashville and Middle Tennessee\, we have been so grateful for the warm welcome our firm has received from this vibrant and growing region. Nashville’s core values and talents are an excellent match for our firm\, and we look forward to expanding our presence here. We are committed to being a member of Nashville’s vital business community and contributing to and investing in the city’s continued success.” \nAB President and CEO Seth Bernstein \n“We have a global brand of music\, creativity and a very vibrant community\, a community that is open to any population from any part of the world. Nashville has been a place where people from all over the world have come to and stay here. Nashville has a great location\, very stable state and local governments and a population that is warm\, engaging and open and welcoming. We continue to promote those assets. We continue to let people know Nashville is open for business on an international basis and we see great success. \nThere are the Bridgestones\, the Nissans\, the AllianceBernsteins — all of these big businesses that are international in nature\, they are invested here and we continue to encourage that. We find an awful lot that businesses that are looking to locate their business activity in Nashville and other places are looking for the compatibility of the community. \n“I love to tell the story of AllianceBernsten\, because typically businesses will want to know where is their workforce coming from when they get here. AllianceBernstein was a little different. The first question they asked us was\, can you set up meetings with 22 community cultural organizations so that we can really understand what the culture of the community is.” \nRalph Schulz\, Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce CEO\, “Global Nashville with Karl Dean” April 14\, 2020 \n“AllianceBernstein L.P. (AB) will invest $11.4 million and create 200 additional jobs at its global headquarters in Nashville\, TN. The expansion will bring the global asset management firm’s planned investment in Nashville to more than $80 million. In May 2018\, the company announced plans to relocate its headquarters from New York City to Nashville and bring 1\,050 jobs to Middle Tennessee.” \nBusiness Facilities\, January 14\, 2020 \n  \nKate Burke is the Chief Operating Officer of AB\, responsible for overseeing Legal\, Compliance\, Corporate Communications\, Human Capital\, Corporate and Information Security\, Operations\, and Technology. She was previously chief administrative officer\, and\, prior to that\, head of Human Capital and chief talent officer. Burke has more than two decades of financial services and consulting industry experience. She joined Bernstein Research in 2004 in institutional sales\, where she rose to senior vice president and managing director\, overseeing institutional sales teams in the Midwest\, New York and Canada. Prior to joining the firm\, Burke was a manager at A.T. Kearney\, where she led client cross-divisional organizational development programs. She holds a BA in economics from College of the Holy Cross and an MBA from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Location: Nashville \nAB in Nashville \n“AB is an asset-management and research firm with a unique combination of expertise\, ingenious solutions and global reach. We attract the industry’s best talent—our people have the relentless drive and ingenuity to spark innovative ideas. We’re truly global. We’ve built an extensive and integrated global footprint over five decades\, giving us the broadest possible perspective and we’re now expanding to Nashville. \n“AB is a leading global investment-management and research firm. We bring together a wide range of insights\, expertise and innovations to advance the interests of our clients around the world.” \n\n“Global Nashville with Karl Dean” is a Webinar program produced by the Tennessee World Affairs Council as part of its global affairs awareness education mission. “GNKD” features conversations with community leaders from government\, business\, nonprofits\, “new American” groups\, academia and others\, with a perspective on the issues and developments that connect to the idea of Nashville as a “global place.” The Webinar is featured on every other Tuesday at 7pm and is archived on the YouTube.com/TNWAC channel and “Global Tennessee” Podcast family. \nThe Tennessee World Affairs Council is a nonpartisan\, educational\, nonprofit charity that seeks to bring the world to our community. DESCRIPTION:In Association with Belmont University and the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce present\n\nGlobal Nashville with Karl Dean\n \n\n\nKarl Dean\, former Nashville Mayor talks with community leaders about the things that make \nNashville a global city.\nJoin Mayor Dean for a conversation with Mohamed-Shukri Hassan\, Director of the Office of New Americans as they talk about Mr. Hassan’s new position and community issues in the headlines. \nMohamed-Shukri Hassan\, Nashville Mayor’s Office of New Americans\nHassan\, who was born in Somalia\, worked with or advised the Metro Public Health Department\, New American Development Center\, Nashville Entrepreneur Center\, Metro Arts and the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition and the New Americans Advisory Council. \nThe Mayor’s Office of New Americans works to engage immigrants and empower them to participate in our government and our community. The number of foreign-born residents in Nashville has more than doubled over the past decade. Nearly 12 percent of our population was born outside of the United States\, and nearly half of those people are recent immigrants who entered the country since 2000. In fact\, in 2012\, Nashville had the fastest-growing immigrant population of any American city. Nashville is the proud home of the nation’s largest Kurdish population\, as well as growing enclaves of immigrants from Somalia\, Burma\, and all over the world. \n“Shukri-Hassan’s journey to Middle Tennessee is a unique one. Shortly after being born in Somalia in 1986\, his family fled their home country due to the growing Civil War. The family bounced from place to place in East Africa\, eventually settling in Nairobi\, Kenya. Though they found temporary solace\, they had dreams to live in the United States of America. Shukri-Hassan’s mother was the first to make the leap overseas through the immigration lottery. After a few years of saving\, the rest of the Shukri-Hassan family joined her in Decatur\, Georgia.”  [Continued here] \n[raw] \n\n \n\n[/raw]

SUMMARY:ELECTION 2020: Global Issues | Sep 24
DESCRIPTION:Election 2020: Global Issues: Trade\, Climate\, Globalization\nA panel of distinguished speakers with panel chair: Dr. Jeffrey Overby\, PhD. \n\nClimate: Gary Garfield\, former CEO Bridgestone Americas (Confirmed)\nGlobalization: Dr. Richard Wike\, PhD\, Director Global Attitudes Research\, Pew Research Center (Confirmed)\nTrade: Dr. Erica Owen\, PhD\, Associate Professor\, Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh (Confirmed)\n\n \nThe Global Issues Panel of our Election 2020 project focuses on three key issues affecting American security and prosperity: climate change\, trade and globalization. We have assembled a distinguished panel of specialists to provide background and context. \nClimate: The United Nations says of the importance of understanding climate change: Climate Change is the defining issue of our time and we are at a defining moment. From shifting weather patterns that threaten food production\, to rising sea levels that increase the risk of catastrophic flooding\, the impacts of climate change are global in scope and unprecedented in scale. \nGlobalization: Mike Collins\, writing for Forbes\, said of globalization\, “There is no question that globalization has been a good thing for many developing countries who now have access to our markets and can export cheap goods. Globalization has also been good for Multi-national corporations and Wall Street. But globalization has not been good for working people (blue or white collar) and has led to the continuing deindustrialization of America.” Globalization is a complicated issue. It is necessary to evaluate the pros and cons before drawing any conclusions. \nTrade: The United States Trade Representative’s office says of the importance of trade: Trade is critical to America’s prosperity – fueling economic growth\, supporting good jobs at home\, raising living standards and helping Americans provide for their families with affordable goods and services. \nScroll down for reference material on these important\, complicated topics and materials provided by the panelists. \nTNWAC is launching our Election 2020 global awareness series as we prepare for the Presidential Debate hosted by our partner Belmont University on October 22nd. \nTNWAC is presenting interviews and panels with distinguished specialists in international affairs to prepare voters with background and context on the critical issues they should know about the world. \nTNWAC is a nonpartisan educational organization that seeks to educate the community on global affairs. \nPanel Chair Dr. Jeffrey Overby \nDr. Jeffrey Overby is Director of the Center for International Business and the Edward C. and Helen J.
