He is known for his bipartisan approach to problem-solving and his careful fiscal management. Among those who have served in senior elected positions\, Governor Bredesen has a unique depth of healthcare experience in both the private and public sectors. \nPrior to entering public service\, Bredesen worked in the healthcare industry. Between research trips to the public library\, he drafted a business plan at his kitchen table that led to the creation of HealthAmerica Corp. in 1980\, a Nashville-based healthcare management company. Ms. Knarr has been responsible for creating partnerships between business and U.S. government agencies on foreign policy initiatives. She has worked extensively with U.S. and foreign government departments and agencies- both federal and local. International affairs is in her blood and she is an alum of the United Nations\, the U.S. Government\, the Government of the Republic of Chile\, multiple internationally-focused think tanks and nonprofits. \nShe received a Masters of Arts from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University specializing in International Political Economy. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and International Relations from Washington & Jefferson College. She is a proud aunt\, girlfriend and cat mom. She’s also enjoying new socially-distanced hobbies like gardening and Peloton yoga. \nDr. Gretchen Neisler – Welcome \nDr. Neisler became the University of Tennessee Vice Provost for International Affairs and Director\, Center for Global Engagement in 2018. She earned a PhD\, Higher Education Administration from Michigan State University. \nDr. Marlene Spoerri \nMarlene Spoerri is Director of Inclusive Diplomacy and Systems Change at Independent Diplomat\, where she leads work to advance women’s political participation in peace processes. Marlene has advised female leaders involved in peace processes in Syria\, Western Sahara\, Libya\, and elsewhere. She is the author of Engineering Revolution: The Paradox of Democracy Promotion in Serbia published by the University of Pennsylvania Press. Marlene has a PhD from the University of Amsterdam\, and has published on democratization\, democracy promotion and transitional justice. \nDr. Jennifer Klot \nDr. Jennifer F. Klot has more than 25 years of UN experience working to advance gender equality\, child rights\, and humanitarian action. At the UN\, she led Graça Machel’s 1996 Independent Expert Report on the Impact of Armed Conflict of Children\, and the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf 2002 UN Expert Assessment on Women\, Peace\, and Security. These initiatives\, respectively\, resulted in the first-ever UN Security Council Resolutions on Children and on Women\, which created new standards of protection for women and children in armed conflict. \nBetween 2002- 2013\, Dr. Klot was a Senior Advisor on Gender\, Security\, and HIV/AIDS at the Social Science Research Council. Following this\, she was the Vice President\, Health\, of the Social Impact Exchange\, and was subsequently appointed as Plan International’s Representative to the United Nations. Dr. Klot is the founding partner of Policy & Praxis for Social Change\, a consulting group that provides strategic planning and program support to multilateral agencies\, foundations\, and non-profits to advance sustainable development\, social justice\, and gender equality. Dr. Klot holds a doctorate in Social Policy from the London School of Economics. She earned a Master of City and Regional Planning from Cornell University\, and a bachelor’s degree from Douglass College at Rutgers\, the State University of New Jersey. \nSharon K. Roberson \n\n\n\nSharon K. Roberson\, Esq. is a seasoned C – Suite executive. She serves as President and CEO of YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee\, the largest domestic violence service provider in Tennessee. Since joining the YWCA\, Sharon has led the expansion of the shelter beds at the Weaver Domestic Violence Center to offer more women and children shelter and care. She has also broadened the agency’s life- saving services\, including adding the only Emergency DV Text Line in Tennessee and implementing a children’s program at Weaver. Under Sharon’s leadership\, the YW has grown all of our school-based programs\, including expanding our Amend Together healthy masculinity program to six other YWCA’s across the country. The YW has also expanded our adult learning center programing and our career services and gained full construction and operational funding for the first-ever pet shelter in the State for pets of domestic violence victims. \n\n\n\nBefore this position\, she served as a Senior Vice President\, General Counsel\, and Secretary for Direct General Corporation. Sharon has over 30 years of experience in the insurance industry\, including before Direct\, 17 years with AIG/American General Life and Accident and American General Property supervising employees in various US cities and Manila Philippines. During her career at AIG/American General\, she served as a General Counsel for almost a decade and as COO of various companies. Sharon was a state regulator for over a decade. As a regulator\, she held the position of General Counsel and Assistant Commissioner for the State of Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance\, as well as Director of self-insurance and surplus lines. She was appointed by both a democratic and republican governor. \nMary Montague \nMary Montague has over 40 years’ experience in peace building in Northern Ireland. Co- founder of TIDES Training\, she delivered Peace Building and Mediation interventions both in her own country and internationally. In 2001 Mary co-founded TIDES Training a Charitable non-profit Training and Consultancy company. Mary has an established background in community capacity development with particular interest in mediation and conflict resolution. She designed and implemented mediative interventions to address highly contentious and volatile emergency situations. \nMary was a director on highly commended European projects such as TIDES Training of Trainers\, Stepping into Diversity and Building Relationships in Communities. BRIC was one of the first using Systemic Mediative & Restorative Approaches project delivered across N. Ireland in partnership with the Northern Ireland Housing Executive and Rural Development Council.  She is a Restorative Practitioner and has supported the transition of armed groups\, communities\, and civil society towards peace. Mary is the European Representative for Mediators Beyond Borders. She trains and mentors Women leaders from across the world in mediation\, peace building and restorative practice. She is a founding member of Women Waging Peace a global network created at the J.F. Kennedy School of Government\, Harvard University\, Boston\, USA. \nIn 2016 and 2017 she was a visiting Professor at Washington & Jefferson College Washington PA USA delivering classes on mediation and restorative approaches. She lectures on the mediation course  for the Common Security and Defence policy programmes held under the auspices of the European Security and Defence College at The Edward Kennedy Institute\, Maynooth. She serves as President and CEO of YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee\, the largest domestic violence service provider in Tennessee. Since joining the YWCA\, Sharon has led the expansion of the shelter beds at the Weaver Domestic Violence Center to offer more women and children shelter and care. She has also broadened the agency’s life- saving services\, including adding the only Emergency DV Text Line in Tennessee and implementing a children’s program at Weaver. Under Sharon’s leadership\, the YW has grown all of our school-based programs\, including expanding our Amend Together healthy masculinity program to six other YWCA’s across the country. The YW has also expanded our adult learning center programing and our career services and gained full construction and operational funding for the first-ever pet shelter in the State for pets of domestic violence victims. \n\n\n\nBefore this position\, she served as a Senior Vice President\, General Counsel\, and Secretary for Direct General Corporation. She was appointed by both a democratic and republican governor. \nMary Montague \nMary Montague has over 40 years’ experience in peace building in Northern Ireland. Co- founder of TIDES Training\, she delivered Peace Building and Mediation interventions both in her own country and internationally. In 2001 Mary co-founded TIDES Training a Charitable non-profit Training and Consultancy company. Mary has an established background in community capacity development with particular interest in mediation and conflict resolution. She designed and implemented mediative interventions to address highly contentious and volatile emergency situations. \nMary was a director on highly commended European projects such as TIDES Training of Trainers\, Stepping into Diversity and Building Relationships in Communities. BRIC was one of the first using Systemic Mediative & Restorative Approaches project delivered across N. Ireland in partnership with the Northern Ireland Housing Executive and Rural Development Council.  She is a Restorative Practitioner and has supported the transition of armed groups\, communities\, and civil society towards peace. Ms. Knarr has been responsible for creating partnerships between business and U.S. government agencies on foreign policy initiatives. She has worked extensively with U.S. and foreign government departments and agencies- both federal and local. International affairs is in her blood and she is an alum of the United Nations\, the U.S. Government\, the Government of the Republic of Chile\, multiple internationally-focused think tanks and nonprofits. \nShe received a Masters of Arts from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University specializing in International Political Economy. She’s also enjoying new socially-distanced hobbies like gardening and Peloton yoga. \nDr. Gretchen Neisler – Welcome \nDr. Neisler became the University of Tennessee Vice Provost for International Affairs and Director\, Center for Global Engagement in 2018. She earned a PhD\, Higher Education Administration from Michigan State University. \nDr. Marlene Spoerri \nMarlene Spoerri is Director of Inclusive Diplomacy and Systems Change at Independent Diplomat\, where she leads work to advance women’s political participation in peace processes. Marlene has advised female leaders involved in peace processes in Syria\, Western Sahara\, Libya\, and elsewhere. She is the author of Engineering Revolution: The Paradox of Democracy Promotion in Serbia published by the University of Pennsylvania Press. Marlene has a PhD from the University of Amsterdam\, and has published on democratization\, democracy promotion and transitional justice. \nDr. Jennifer Klot \nDr. Jennifer F. Klot has more than 25 years of UN experience working to advance gender equality\, child rights\, and humanitarian action. At the UN\, she led Graça Machel’s 1996 Independent Expert Report on the Impact of Armed Conflict of Children\, and the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf 2002 UN Expert Assessment on Women\, Peace\, and Security. These initiatives\, respectively\, resulted in the first-ever UN Security Council Resolutions on Children and on Women\, which created new standards of protection for women and children in armed conflict. \nBetween 2002- 2013\, Dr. Klot was a Senior Advisor on Gender\, Security\, and HIV/AIDS at the Social Science Research Council. Following this\, she was the Vice President\, Health\, of the Social Impact Exchange\, and was subsequently appointed as Plan International’s Representative to the United Nations. Dr. Klot is the founding partner of Policy & Praxis for Social Change\, a consulting group that provides strategic planning and program support to multilateral agencies\, foundations\, and non-profits to advance sustainable development\, social justice\, and gender equality. Dean\nFormer Nashville Mayor\nApril 13\, 2021 @ 7 pm CT\n \n\n\nRolando Toyos\, M.D. \nDr. Toyos is originally from California. He graduated from Santa Rosa High School where he played Varsity Basketball\, Baseball and Football and was a finalist for the CIF Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. He received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from The University of California\, Berkeley and Stanford University\, where he was a straight A student. Before beginning medical school\, Dr. Toyos worked as a high school teacher and basketball coach. He won the National Teaching Award from Columbia University for his science curriculum development and his work with at-risk children. He then received his medical degree at the University of Illinois where he was Class President\, graduating with James Scholar Academic Honors and received a community service award for helping Chicago City Public Schools develop a pre-med program for students interested in medicine.  He completed his internship in Internal Medicine at Illinois Masonic Hospital in Chicago. He completed his Ophthalmology residency at Northwestern University and Chicago Children’s Hospital. Dr. Toyos spent one year performing LASIK at the  Assil Eye Institute in Beverly Hills. \nDr. Toyos is Board Certified in Ophthalmology and specializes in Cataract Surgery\, LASIK\, Glaucoma\, and Dry Eye. He is one of the most experienced surgeons in the country\, completing over 35\,000 cataract surgeries\, 20\,000 glaucoma laser treatments and 25\,000 LASIK surgeries.    He was the first surgeon to combine Laser Cataract Surgery with Aqualase creating a new Laser For Cataract Surgery L4C procedure.  He holds various patents including one for a light based technology used for the treatment of Dry Eye.  Dr. Toyos is the inventor of the procedure Intense Pulse Light IPL for Dry Eye Disease.  Recently the United Nations (UNESCO) honored Dr. Toyos with an Innovation Award.  He has trained hundreds of surgeons both nationally and internationally on surgical techniques\, medications and new technologies. He has authored several papers and books. One book for medical students\, now in its 3rd edition\, was a best seller on college campuses for several years.  His newest book Dry Eye Disease Treatment in the Year 2020 was number 2 on the Amazon Best Sellers List.  He belongs to many professional organizations including the Sports Ophthalmology Society of America (SOSA) of which he is the current president. Dr. Toyos has worked with various professional sports teams and organizations like the NFL\, NBA\, MLB\, and World Boxing Association\, Memphis Grizzlies\, Seattle Mariners\, and Memphis Redbirds to name a few. He has been named one of The Best Doctors and is the only eye surgeon in Tennessee voted Top Doc by Trusted Lasik Surgeons.\n​\nDr. Toyos is involved in the community. He won The Humanitarian Award by the Jazz Foundation of America for providing free surgical care to the displaced victims of Hurricane Katrina. Before beginning medical school\, Dr. Toyos worked as a high school teacher and basketball coach. He then received his medical degree at the University of Illinois where he was Class President\, graduating with James Scholar Academic Honors and received a community service award for helping Chicago City Public Schools develop a pre-med program for students interested in medicine.  He completed his internship in Internal Medicine at Illinois Masonic Hospital in Chicago. He completed his Ophthalmology residency at Northwestern University and Chicago Children’s Hospital. Dr. Toyos spent one year performing LASIK at the  Assil Eye Institute in Beverly Hills. \nDr. Toyos is Board Certified in Ophthalmology and specializes in Cataract Surgery\, LASIK\, Glaucoma\, and Dry Eye. He is one of the most experienced surgeons in the country\, completing over 35\,000 cataract surgeries\, 20\,000 glaucoma laser treatments and 25\,000 LASIK surgeries.    He was the first surgeon to combine Laser Cataract Surgery with Aqualase creating a new Laser For Cataract Surgery L4C procedure.  He holds various patents including one for a light based technology used for the treatment of Dry Eye.  Dr. Toyos is the inventor of the procedure Intense Pulse Light IPL for Dry Eye Disease.  Recently the United Nations (UNESCO) honored Dr. Toyos with an Innovation Award.  He has trained hundreds of surgeons both nationally and internationally on surgical techniques\, medications and new technologies. DESCRIPTION:Global Nashville with Karl Dean\nMarch 2\, 2021\nRefugees and Tennessee\nA Conversation with Lisa Sherman Nikolas \nExecutive Director\, Tennessee Immigrant & Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC) \nand Special Guests  \nLouisa Saratora\, State Refugee Coordinator\, Tennessee Office for Refugees \nand Isaac James \n\nOn February 4th President Joe Biden signed an Executive Order reversing the decline in U.S. refugee admissions. The 15\,000 ceiling approved by President Trump for this fiscal year was the lowest number of refugees permitted since the modern program began in 1980. Biden’s order boosts the cap to 125\,000 for the fiscal year beginning October 1\, 2020. President Biden also called for talks with  Congress “about making a down payment on that commitment as soon as possible\,” suggesting action to increase the current fiscal year ceiling of 15\,000. \nWhat does this change mean for the reception of refugees in Tennessee? Join us for a conversation about these developments. \n\nWho is a refugee? According to the National Immigration Forum: “A person outside the U.S. seeking refuge. The U.S.\, based on international law\, defines “refugee” as a person outside the country of his or her nationality\, who is unable or unwilling to return to that country because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution based on his or her race\, religion\, nationality\, membership in a particular social group\, or political opinion. The legal basis for humanitarian admissions of refugees and asylum seekers to the United States began with the Refugee Act of 1980…” \n\nOUR PANEL \n\nLisa Sherman-Nikolas is a Guatemalan-American whose family made the difficult decision to leave Guatemala and relocate to Nashville in 2001\, Lisa has a deep commitment to fighting for an immigration system where all people can access safety\, opportunity\, and belonging. She joined in October 2015 and served as Policy Director for nearly five years before stepping into the role of Executive Director. \nAs Policy Director Lisa developed a track record of success in winning policy victories through research and analysis\, strategic communications\, lobbying\, and working with colleagues across programs to mobilize our base and develop community leaders to lead our campaigns. Victories under her leadership include defeating dozens of pieces of anti-immigrant legislation at the state legislature\, convincing Governor Lee to consent to continue to welcome refugees\, and pressuring the Davidson County Sheriff to terminate a rent-a-bed agreement with immigration and customs enforcement. Over the years\, she’s built respect and trust with partners\, lobbyists\, and elected officials across political aisles. \nPrior to joining the TIRRC team\, she worked in the international human rights field in New York\, London\, and Senegal. Lisa holds a Master’s degree in Conflict\, Security\, and Development from the Department of War Studies at King’s College London and is fluent in Spanish and English. \n\nIsaac James was born in Ifo refugee camp in Kenya\, Isaac is passionate about creating opportunities to strengthen migrants’ and refugees’ integration in their host communities. He currently serves as an Education and Care Coordinator for Refugee Empowerment Program in Memphis\, TN\, developing an entrepreneurship program for young immigrants. In addition to this role\, Isaac serves as a Benjamin A. Gilman Alumni Ambassador\, informing and helping students apply for scholarship opportunities to study abroad. \nLouisa Saratora is State Refugee Coordinator\, Tennessee Office for Refugees. She has worked with refugees in Tennessee for nearly 25 years in direct service\, program development and coordination\, and grant management and oversight.
